a b Dazai, Osamu (2023). A Shameful Life. Translated by Gibeau, Mark. Berkeley, California: Stone Bridge Press. Released from the hospital where he was taken after his suicide attempt, Ōba becomes a morphine addict. He is confined to a mental institution and, upon release, moves to an isolated place with his brother's help, concluding the story with the comment that he feels neither happy nor unhappy now.Oba is himself haunted by ghosts in his daily life, so he draws mostly ghosts, so you can see the attraction to the supernatural for Ito. Oba/Dasai was derided by his father throughout his life. He was told he was a failure for doing manga and told the honorable thing he should do would be to commit suicide, which in fact he/Dasai attempted a few times. a b c d "No Longer Human". Viz Media. After finishing high school, Ōba is sent to Tokyo to visit the university. Influenced by a fellow artist, Horiki, whom he meets at a painting class, Ōba descends into a pattern of drinking, smoking and harlotry, and attends communist meetings without being a staunch follower. After spending the night with a married woman, he attempts to commit shinjū (double suicide) with her by drowning. He survives and she dies, leaving him with an excruciating feeling of guilt. Afflicted with an intense feeling of alienation and otherness and finding it nearly impossible to understand those who surround him, Ōba resorts to buffoonery in early years to establish interpersonal relationships. Establishing the mood of the rest of the book, Ōba describes humans as he is separate from them, describing them foolishly and always perplexed by humans. He also describes numerous times that his antics is a way to not anger humans and not to be taken seriously to avoid reprimands. He is sexually abused by a male servant and a female servant during his childhood but decides that reporting it would be useless.Later on he gets involved with the communists, continues to jump from woman to woman, becomes an alcoholic, attempts suicide, and that’s it. I’ve no clue what the point was - all I saw was gratuitously gloomy people being sad over their depressing lives. I didn’t understand why Oba doesn’t feel human or what we were meant to think about that. In high school, a student named Takeichi verbalizes that one of Yozo’s comedic pratfalls is a deliberate blunder. Fearing that Takeichi will out him as a fraud, Yozo tries to befriend him. One rainy day, Yozo successfully drags Takeichi to his house for shelter. Yozo cleans Takeichi’s ears, which have become infected from the rain. Takeichi awkwardly compliments Yozo, telling him that many women will fall for him.

In a way, the focus lies on horror and visually disturbing images and I like it but sometimes it get exaggerated. There are tons of really graphic scenes that I found overwhelming. I hated Yozo Oba in here more than the novel. In the novel, I felt deep sympathy to him even if i hate him, i still felt so much for him because of his traumas and the way he was treated. In here, he seema terrible from womanizing and his manipulation but that was him, he was not a good man, he was deceptive. It was troubling and sad to see him. But Yozo was the embodiment of human's fear, desires, horrible, weakness and cowardice, that you may relate or hate for how similar he is to us. he is almost a reflection of ourselves we dont want to admit deep down in our heart.

Once again I am convinced that Mr. Ito has been drawing his home life all along through his career... For 2024, Tuttle Publishing announced a new translation by Juliet Winters Carpenter. [13] Notable adaptations [ edit ] Film [ edit ]
