About this deal

We had everything we needed and the house was lovely and clean. We would love to come again next time we are in the area. The plot easily blends the two main threads of serial killer and cat and mouse and I found that both were equally intriguing. With the setting driving the chill factor along with one of the narrators having a more than unusual viewpoint this was a fast paced and highly addictive one sitting read.

Maddy Hart needs a fresh start. She's running from an abusive relationship. She's on a deadline with her publisher. She just needs to get away. While I was, initially, quite taken by the book it went downhill rapidly. The revelation as to the identity of our serial killer really was a bolt out of the blue, and the rapidity with which things escalated made little sense. Before too long, all manner of people are making their way to this remote Lake District setting. Some don’t survive. Others arrive at a fortuitous moment. First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. Residents living with dementia, their families and team members will be supported by ensuring Hallmark care Homes becomes the leader in relationship-centred dementia care And then, strange things start happening. Things that go bump in the night; whispers and music emanating from downstairs; a sodden wedding dress left on her doorstep; vivid dreams that are all too real that tell her something sinister happened in this very house. And then she meets Alfie, a teenager with an innocent demeanour who is younger than his years, who alludes to something called "the lake people". But as the days turn into nights, Maddy begins to question her decision to cut herself off in the middle of nowhere with no phone reception or help nearby, should something happen to her. Especially when it becomes clear that someone is trying to frighten her. But who? She doesn't know anyone really. She has only met sexy Seth, kooky Glenys and her adorable son Alfie. And Stella is the only one who knows where she is. Even Connor doesn't know...or does he? Lakeview Care Home is also one of the leading dementia care homes in Surrey. At the heart of our dementia community is our beautiful, light and spacious orangery, which provides a wonderful space for residents to enjoy our many activities and events. This orangery leads onto a secure roof terrace with raised planters, bird feeders and bird boxes. We have recently relaunched our dementia garden, making it a haven for residents with new plant life to encourage interesting birds to visit. We have installed a greenhouse to make the garden more accessible and a range of comfy seats to enable residents to sit and enjoy the outside space. And with a retained GP service you can feel safe in the knowledge that your loved one will get any additional support they need, when they need it.

The plot was really good, and although it seemed straight-forward, it wasn't. I loved Maddy, and her friend Stella. Although Stella's actions left a lot to be desired, she was still a friend. Glynnis and her son were just as entertaining. All the characters were a little quirky, well thought out. Maddy's best friend Stella, made selfish decisions that affected her likeability. It was difficult for me to have sympathy for her situation. (It's hard to explain without spoilers,) Also, the ending abruptly cut off and left readers hanging with no explanation. I wanted to know so much more. Honestly, I was like W-H-A-T?? This can't be the end. I need another chapter to answer my questions. Helen Phifer is such a awesome author. Her book Find The Girl is one of my favorite books ever. I wanted Lakeview House to be THAT good. This is an overview of what we found during the inspection. The quality rating for this care home is: Our judgement for each outcome: two star good service Choice of home Health and personal care Daily life and social activities Complaints and protection Environment Staffing Management and administration peterchart Poor Adequate Good Excellent How we did our inspection: This inspection was carried out in accordance with the Care quality Commission (CQC) policy and methodologies which require review of key standards for the provision of a care home for older people that takes account of the peoples views and information received about the service since the last inspection. Construction work began in 2016 by energy and regeneration specialist ENGIE to convert the area of land, originally a vacant care home, into Council housing for older people. This includes wheelchair friendly apartments as part of a “bright and welcoming” design scheme chosen by residents in the area. two star good service A quality rating is our assessment of how well a care home is meeting the needs of the people who use it. Specialist care homes in Bletchley

Writer, Maddy Hart, decides to take a job overseeing the renovation of an old mansion, Lakeview House, in the Lake District. It is perfect timing as she wants to get away from her violent ex, Connor. The House is situated out of the local village so Maddy would be there alone most of the time. When she arrives, the place is beautiful although it does have a slightly eerie feeling, but Maddy soon manages to make friends with Seth, a local man who runs the village pub, & Glenys who runs a tarot reading business. Maddy starts to have strange dreams about the House in its former glory days when a young bride drowned in the nearby lake & when weird things start to happen like music playing in the middle of the night, Maddy is unsure if she is being haunted by the dead or by the living. As always my opinions are my own and I absolutely do not want to discourage anyone from reading this book. We are have different taste and you may love it. I will remain a devoted fan of Helen Phifer's amazing work and will read everything she publishes. These are requirements that were set at the previous inspection, but have still not been met. They say what the registered person had to do to meet the Care Standards Act 2000, Care Homes Regulations 2001 and the National Minimum Standards. Pat Green used to work in the Londis shop next door to the old care home at Lakeview. Her mother Margaret, aged 87 is one of the residents who will shortly be moving in to Lakeview.

I didn’t know what to make of some of the characters though. Maddy is escaping her violent ex Connor, so taking on a caretaker role in the Lake District hundreds of miles away made sense. I think she was the only character I liked. I didn’t necessarily dislike the others although Connor was clearly scum so I won’t spare him another word, and Maddy’s alleged best friend Stella proves to be a bad friend at best, and at worst she withheld information putting Maddy’s life in danger. Nobody felt superfluous, and they were all three dimensional, although one or two stretched credibility. My “suspension of disbelief” did take a mild battering. You can play billiards and darts at Lakeview House, and the area is popular for fishing and hiking. Barbecue facilities are included at the holiday home, and guests can also relax in the garden or go on a picnic in the picnic area. We know there is something suspicious happening in the area. There are passages from the perspective of someone who is familiar with the area. Someone who is killing walkers and dumping their bodies in the lake. This person wants Maddy out, and is prepared to kill anyone who puts their interests in danger. This shows that the home is meeting all 11 outcomes of the Hallmark Care Homes’ Dementia Strategy. These are: Lakeview House did not have listed building protection, or conservation area protection, but it was protected by condition of approval. Planners are obviously not familiar with this." On a personal level, I believe that this is a test case for the powers bestowed upon Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Council in relation to planning decisions.
