About this deal

Unsurprisingly, this large solid oak barrel is heavy, weighing approximately 30 kg. It’s therefore a lot harder to move around the garden than a plastic model, which may be a necessary consideration for some people. I know what you’re thinking though – what even is a half barrel planter, and which one should I choose? Do not fear, we have selected the best half barrel planters on the UK market, to make choosing the perfect planter a walk in the park for you. What is a half barrel planter? Despite looking like part of a wooden barrel, this planter is in fact made from recycled plastic. It therefore has the charm of a traditional planter, but can be left outside all year round without the fear of applying waterproofing treatments or dealing with wood rot. In terms of appearance, this barrel is the closest that you will come to the real deal, as the company uses real whiskey barrels to create their products. Each one is unique, rustic and super sturdy, and some customers have even reported a slight whiskey smell coming from the barrels, which I think is wonderful.

Half barrel planters are usually very large, often with a volume of up to 100L. The depth and diameter are the main indicators of the size.Plastic barrels can look surprisingly like the real thing, especially from a distance. They are often made from resin, or another type of plastic, and are moulded to look like wooden barrels with metal belts. Despite these issues, I like how this half barrel planter has a hole pre-drilled into the centre of the base, to enable drainage underneath whatever plant you decide to rehome in the planter. This is a design feature which many manufacturers leave out in case customers want to turn their planter into a water feature. But as we have already established, water and this product do not mix particularly well, so the drainage hole is a good addition for green-fingered planters who aren’t bothered about having a water feature. As with UK-Gardens’ plastic planter, Homestead’s product does not come with pre-drilled holes, and you know the drill by now – this makes it ideal for a water feature but means more work for you if you are looking to use the barrel as a planter.

I think this is the ideal wooden half barrel planter, especially if you are a fan of authentic and original style – it’s just a matter of deciding whether you think the money is a stretch or not, but for my money it’s a valid investment compared to the other products in this review. If you want an authentically rustic barrel planter, with history and charm, you may be swayed towards a wooden option. To avoid buying new plastic products, I recommend choosing a plastic barrel made from recycled materials . These offer a good compromise between respecting the environment and maintaining the practical qualities of plastic. Temesso create several different type of barrel planter, and their Wine Barrel Planter – Rustic has a darker, more aged look than some of their other models. Weighing a light 1.4 kg, it’s also practical to move around the garden, whilst still feeling solid and robust. In fact, it’s so watertight that many customers have even reported using the Oakwood Barrel Planter as a small pond, or water-feature, to great effect.Upcycled from an original solid oak barrel, in a previous life this planter held red wine for wineries in Europe. Now, it can be used as either a large planter or water feature in the garden. Create a stunning container garden by arranging a combination of plants with different colours, heights, and textures in the spacious half barrel. This allows you to easily design captivating displays that can be changed or refreshed as desired. They tend to be more expensive than plastic barrels, so might not be as suitable for those on a tight budget. Some maintenance is required as well, such as treating the wood against rot, which should be done yearly. Most people find their wooden barrel planters can last at least 20 – 30 years if looked after well. Drainage holes are important for growing plants as they stop water stagnating at the bottom of the barrel. If water pools at the bottom of a pot with no escape it can cause the plant’s roots to rot. It can also become a playground for bacteria which can transmit disease to the plant via the roots. The Real Whisky Solid Oak Half Barrel Planter combines functionality and captivating aesthetics for gardens and patios. Its weathered appearance and genuine whisky barrel origin evoke a sense of history and craftsmanship.

Fill the half barrel planter with a variety of plants, including flowers, herbs, shrubs, or small trees. It provides a charming and rustic home for your greenery, adding natural beauty to your garden or patio. Keep in mind that the larger the barrel, the heavier it will be. This is particularly true for wooden barrels. Plastic barrels are significantly lighter than wooden barrels, no matter their size. Specification: Material: Wood + Metal , Single hole in centre of base for liquid drainage: no , Size (Approx): 63 x 86 x 43cm Elevate your outdoor space with this remarkable planter, a testament to the beauty of repurposed materials and the allure of authentic whisky barrel craftsmanship. Let your plants flourish in this charming half barrel planter and enjoy the unique character it brings to your garden. The Real Whisky Solid Oak Half Barrel Planter offers a multitude of uses for your gardening and outdoor needs: Most wooden barrels are watertight, although they may not be instantly watertight on arrival. If the wood is very dry (as is often the case when the barrel planter arrives), it will have shrunk and there will be gaps for water to leak through. After a couple of weeks of holding water, the wood should expand and seal any gaps. This is worth remembering if you’re aiming to use the half barrel planter as a mini pond or water feature.

At similar money to the second option we compared but with the twist you are paying just twelve quid or so a piece with these half barrel planters, making them the cheapest product on this list. However, the word ‘cheap’ indicates a sacrifice of quality, which you certainly won’t find with Coopers of Stortford. Aesthetically, the design is spot on, and from a distance it would be easy to mistake this planter as the real thing. However, there are no drainage holes, so do with that information what you will. gallon planter notes – They are both effectively the same barrel in terms of appearance and size. With great design and even better value for money, the Cooper of Stortford half barrel plastic planter is a worthy winner of the best plastic planter.
