We welcome the procurement of clear face masks, which has the potential to improve the accessibility of health and social care services for those who rely on seeing facial expressions and lip-reading to communicate, including people who are deaf or have hearing loss. The RNID told us that they 'would really like to see DHSC develop some clear guidelines and recommendations on this so mass produced coverings with clear panels can be produced and more widely used.' The second analysis investigated the effect of different emotions on trust attribution across the three conditions (NM, SM, TM) by analyzing the trust scores obtained by KDEF stimuli. A Friedman test applied to the three Conditions separately showed a main effect of Emotion in all Conditions (NM, χ 2(3, N = 41) = 16.32, p = 0.001, W = 0.133); TM, χ 2(3, N = 41) = 24.46, p< 0.001, W = 0.199; SM, χ 2(3, N = 40) = 45.72, p< 0.001, W = 0.381) (Fig. 3B). The downside of the fully clear masks is that they're supposed to be single-use and are sold in bulk - they're intended more for health and education settings than for day-to-day use. There are badges available to let others know why you aren't wearing a mask, for example for use on public transport. Their call comes after a planned pilot of transparent masks by the Department of Health and Social Care was cancelled.

The face changes throughout time, and traits that are frequent in children or newborns, such as large buccal fat-pads, which serve to support the cheeks while nursing, fade away. While the amount of the buccal fat pads frequently decreases with age, the prominence of bones grows and develops. There are exemptions to face covering rules for people who rely on lip-reading, but it's still potentially difficult to communicate with the wider world, where opaque face coverings are the norm.

They've grown in popularity over the past year, and are a necessary face-covering option to help make things easier for the deaf community.This follows a national and international call to arms in April asking industry to channel their manufacturing power into making PPE for the health and care sector. Standard face coverings obscure facial expressions and prevent lip-reading. Clear face masks attempt to mitigate this issue.
