About this deal

The attribution to the devisers of the game and particularly the reproduction of the signature of the key figure, P. R. Reid, are still there, but, not surprisingly, the mention of the T.V. series [which I watched assiduously at the time] has been omitted. Alsoleft off the boxis thereference to his two"memoir" books about his time and experiences in Colditz. These are still worth your attention.

Escape from Colditz remains a fun and fascinating – if unforgiving – way to understand and appreciate an important real-life event. The mechanics may be a tad dated, but this set is a loving tribute to an iconic British board game, which is sure to help it stand the test of time. Any equipment obtained is held by the Escape Officer and not by an individual PoW. Also, once a piece of equipment is obtained all PoWs of that nation are liable for arrest irrespective of which PoWs obtained the equipment. No PoW or German can pass through or over another man. He must go around or move him in accordance with the rules. See Do Or Die, Staff Car and Tunnel rules. Reading through the supplementary information supplied in this booklet, should help you to recreate the atmosphere of Colditz Castle during the war. This is a game that generations of children have grown up with, and is suitable for the whole family or for gaming nights between friends. It will be interesting to see how the recently released 75 th Anniversary Edition compares.

CONCLUSION

The original game, created by Mike Halsall and John Law (with intro music by Bjørn Lynne), was published in 1991 by Digital Magic Software. Watching carefully what the PoWs are doing, upon his turn and having thrown the dice, moves his men similarly to the Escape Officers, circle to circle, up to the total dice throw. He may; A "Do or Die" card is dealt facedown to each Escape Officer. This card remains facedown and unknown to all until played. [2]

A Personal Civilian Escape Kit Card must be held by an Escape Officer and displayed when one of his PoWs reaches an Escape Target. It is a precondition for a successful escape, however, an Escape Officer may collect the Kit at at any time during the game at his discretion, according to the following rules. The Escape Kit consists of Civilian Disguises, Magnetic Compass, Food, false documents, maps, and money (Reichmarks). For the purpose of this game, documents, maps and money have been combined together, providing a total of four components to be collected. by placing one PoW in each of the rooms containing the symbols Disguise, Compass, Food and Documents. When the PoWs are in position simultaneously the Escape Kit Card may be claimed. Seventy-five years ago, Major Reid braved barbed wire, searchlights, and armed guards to Escape from Colditz. Now it's your turn to do the same. While it might show its age in terms of gameplay, this new edition of Escape from Colditz is a gorgeous set for tabletop and history fans alike. Clearly, a lot of care and attention has been paid to respecting the original game and its real-life muse, while also making smart changes to help find a new audience today. All of the components are finished to an impressive level of standard, complemented by beautiful new artwork and the fascinating historical artefacts and details. It’s the type of set you could see continuing to be passed down through generations another 75 years from now. Escape from Colditz is a board game produced by Gibsons Games of London in 1973 that simulates attempted escapes by Allied prisoners-of-war (POWs) from Oflag IV-C (better known as Colditz Castle) during World War II. Designed in part by a former POW who escaped from Colditz, the game was released during the first run of the popular television series Colditz, and the game likewise proved popular. Licensed editions were published by Parker Brothers and a number of other companies. The game proved especially popular in Spain, and resulted in a Spanish-language sequel.

In Issue 29 of Games & Puzzles, John Humphries thought the board was "well designed". He noted that "as the game progresses and escape plans near fruition, it can become quite tense for the players concerned, hoping that they will not be caught at the last minute." However, Humphries found that "the rules are atrociously compiled, full of errors, omissions and anomalies." Despite this, he gave the game a rating of 4 out of 6, saying, " Escape from Colditz should provide many hours of enjoyment for most members of the family." However, there are a few let downs. For example, seemingly incomplete gameplay instructions (even with the additional typed rules and amendments) forced us to deploy house rules on occasions.

Now, Osprey Games has published a new edition of the title to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the real-life breakout next year. Guards posted on the route of the Staff Car must stand aside. No pass is required at the main gate.
