About this deal

Det giver noter af vanilje og de klassiske maritime Arran toner Arran water” was the term given to the illicit liquid that was smuggled across to the mainland at the height of the island’s distilling period. It was then regarded as the best that could be had. Any new distillery needs a good water source for production. So, when Harold Currie sought after a dependable source of water for the Arran distillery, he was helped by a local property owner and his geologist son. Having assessed the water from Loch na Davie, high up Gleann Eason Boirach to the east of Lochranza, they found it to be perfect for their purposes. Supposedly, it is the purest natural water source in Scotland. This water flow ran adjacent to the parcel of land Currie had acquired. It was here that the distillery would be built. Production began on the 17th August 1995. A year later and a one year old was released, of course not technically a whisky, it was released as ‘Arran 1 Year Old Spirit’, and showed great promise for a spirit still in its proverbial adolescence. The core expressions include a ten year old, officially released in 2006, and a cask-strength, the ominously named ‘100 Proof’. Yearly single cask special editions are released, finished in either sherry or bourbon butts. Some interesting finishes have also been released, including a Bordeaux, a port and a Calvados. In the mouth: Pear drops on initial sip. Glorious mouthfeel and grip coming from the ABV. Dense vanilla and honey. The middle of the sip contains a biscuity and roasted malt note. There are sliced green apples and to me, a swell of orange rind as it rounds off. The finish is quite long. That citrus blast remains, with those malty elements and a hint of floral too. Some spice on the finish, I’d say cinnamon and a little ginger; more specifically: ginger nut biscuits. Conclusions: There used to be about fifty distilleries on the island, but most of them were "moonlight" or illegal distilleries. [3] The most recent legally founded distillery on Arran, called ''Lagg'' closed in 1837. [2] There’s a reason this bottling was nominated in the recent Online Scotch Whisky Awards (the OSWA’s) for “Best Entry Level Single Malt 2021” and “Best Single Malt Scotch Whisky 2021,” winning both categories! It goes to show how this presentation of 46% ABV, natural colour and non-chill filtering is captivating whisky connoisseurs. Arran are to be applauded. In 2017 an expansion of the distillery was completed with the installation of an additional wash and spirit still, more than doubling Arran’s capacity to 1.2m litres per year. To accommodate the growing number of visitors to the distillery, Arran added a second tasting room to its visitor centre, and built an adjacent facility with meeting room, tasting bar and blending room named Rowan House. This geography is key to the character of our whisky. On this island, we make a spirit that reflects a range of regional influences, yet achieves a rare and unique personality all its own. Rather like the island itself. The Arran distillery traded at a loss for many years until 2010. In 2003 Currie sold his shares and resigned from the board, the remaining shareholders own the business known as Isle of Arran Distillers Ltd., [5] and the managing director is Euan Mitchell.

saw the release of a 15th anniversary bottling, released on the distillery open day on 3 July. Autumn 2010 also saw the release of the first official 14 year old to be released by the distillery. The first peated Arran single malt, Machrie Moor, has been available since December 2010. The whisky of Arran is mostly used to produce their single malt whisky, but a small proportion also goes into the production of their range of blended whiskies: Lochranza Blend, Robert Burns Blend and Arran Gold Single Malt Whisky Cream Liqueur. Enjoy an interesting and informative visit to this beautiful attraction, where you will be able to try some Arran Single Malt and learn about nosing and tastingfrom professionally trained guides. The distillery is situated to the East of the village of Lochranza at the North of the island and takes its water from the Loch na Davie. Founded in 1993, by Chivas Brothers’ retiring managing director, Harold Currie, the distillery is the only one on the Isle of Arran since the most recent legally run distillery, ‘Lagg’, was closed in 1837. Mr Currie stylized the buildings with the intention of giving them a much more traditional, classic appearance. During the early stages of building, work was briefly interrupted when a pair of Golden Eagles, nesting in the crags above the distillery, tended to their young. The eagles can be seen, to this day, from the courtyard at the distillery. Bottling started with a limited edition three-year-old in 1998 and the range has continued to expand, although today there are fewer ‘finished’ variants than in the past. A peated expression, ‘Machrie Moor’, has also been introduced. After all, demand for smuggled whisky was on the rise and Arran had excellent links to Glasgow. There is some evidence that molasses was also distilled here. When the law changed, a legal distillery ran at Lagg from 1825, but it closed in 1837 and Arran’s distilling heritage was seemingly lost forever. Picturesque Lochranza, at the north of the Isle of Arran, has been the location of the island’s first legal distillery for over 150 years. Until the 19th century, Arran was renowned for its Malt Whisky, often made illicitly, and known locally as "Arran Water". Boom. As in: the current whisky boom. It is something we are experiencing right now. Even as we navigate this post-pandemic world it seems the whisky industry and its boom has remained intact.

In 1994 Arran Distillers was founded by Harold Currie, former director of Chivas and a D-Day veteran, with the intention of building a distillery on Arran. [2] During the construction of the distillery, a pair of golden eagles built their nest on a cliff near the distillery; since golden eagles are a protected species, construction of the distillery was temporarily halted. The distillery, funded by private investors and the sale of bonds, opened in 1995.

However, Harold Currie (former director of Chivas) founded Arran distillers, with the distillery opening in 1995 in Locranza. Locranza is a village on Arran, an oval-shaped island on the west coast of Scotland, located west of Glasgow, just east of Mull of Kintyre. Arran is a unique island steeped in a history of illicit distilling, with around 50 distilleries, with the last legally founded distillery (Lagg) closing in 1837. Plans for the company to build a second distillery in Lagg at the south end of the island were approved in August 2016 and building work began on this project in October 2016. Lagg Distillery began production in April 2019 [6] and opened its visitor's center on 1 July 2019. [7] Amid closures and overproduction, you’d think the last thing any investor would do would be to open a new whisky distillery in Scotland, never mind opening one on the Isle of Arran. At this stage in the 1990s, no one really anticipated the boom we are currently experiencing. The state of the art visitor centre, opened in 1997 by HM the Queen, offers daily tastings,a shop and CASKS Cafe which servesan interesting and appetising menu based on the best of local produce available. Due to current government regulations, all tastings and CASKS Cafe bookings must be pre-aranged in advance. Like I mentioned above: with this boom we are in, the price of whisky is forever increasing. We chase those bottles that are in high demand, for the pursuit of flavour, experience, and value. Arran, and their 10-year-old, need commended for the standard price for the entry level and the value it brings to us the whisky drinker.
