About this deal

These models are adding social features, enabling you to send photos through to friends or relatives while you’re travelling or just making the most of life. Is there anything else you should look out for? We’ve tested a wide range of digital photo frames to find those that offer the best of everything. First, we considered the quality and impact of the display itself, looking for a high resolution screen and colors which ‘pop’. Then we factored in the design behind it, looking for something which is intuitive to set up and operate, but with enough options to suit a range of needs. For instance, does it offer motion sensors and, if so, how responsive are they? If speakers are included, how is the quality of sound? Don’t forget about the basics when it comes to uploading and removing images from the gallery either — the process should be seamless, ideally with compatible Cloud services. We even assessed the stability of the frame and the likelihood of a messy display if it features a touchscreen.

The interface also lets you invite friends to upload images to your frame, change brightness and volume levels, schedule the frame on and off, and set up parameters for viewing slideshows and onscreen EXIF info for each image. We tested the Premium version of the frame, which features four hours of battery life, as opposed to the standard version, which you must keep plugged in. The time periods and options vary from frame to frame and, on certain models – the Facebook Portal, for example – the setting cannot be disabled, meaning the frame will automatically sleep after an hour. Screen size can vary substantially, from the compact display of the Nix Digital Photo Frame 8-inch to the Nixplay Seed Wave, with its 13-inch panel. But size isn’t always everything: smaller frames can often be easier to place and, because the pixels are spread over a smaller area, will sometimes be sharper. Albums can also be imported directly from Google which can save time if your pictures are already well organised but if not, photos can be easily selected from the gallery on your smartphone. If like us you never quite fulfil the intention of printing and displaying photos in your home, the Nixplay photo frame could be the solution. The frame is designed to be used landscape and will automatically pair up portrait images side-by-side, though you can always pair these up yourself using the app if you'd rather. The Nixplay Smart Photo Frame 10.1 Inch Touch is the latest addition to company's range of digital frames. It offers a compact midsize design which will fit in to most rooms and the display is bright enough to add character to your images and really make the landscapes 'pop'. It won't waste electricity, thanks to the voice and motion activated sensors, and it couldn't be more easy to use with the touch screen navigation. Because of this, it would suit those who are new or experienced with this kind of product. This is an especially handy feature if you're giving it to someone slightly less tech-savvy. All you need to do is scan a QR code on the box and use an app on your phone to choose which pictures you want it to display, which adds an extra element of surprise. Several digital photo frames, including the affordable Nix Digital Photo Frame 8-inch, feature motion sensors. These can wake the frame when someone enters the room and, if no motion is detected for a set amount of time, send it to sleep again. High resolution: Now that even most smartphone cameras can shoot at least 10-megapixel images, it doesn’t make sense to consider anything below a 1080p display (a measly 2 megapixels). We considered frames with up to 2K, or 2048p, resolution, but ultimately we don’t think most people need that many pixels in a photo frame. (And most wouldn’t like the price tag that comes with it.) Still, we cover a few good 2K options in Other good digital photo frames.

Choosing a digital photo frame is fairly easy: work out your budget then decide what size you need and whether you’re willing to pay for extra features or Wi-Fi connectivity. How much do you want to spend? And how big a frame do you want? As far as resolution goes, you might want to temper expectations. Many have 1,200 x 800 resolution panels, giving you a lower pixel count than your average tablet or smartphone. Even the best tend to stop at 1,920 x 1,080, with only a handful of higher-resolution models out there. This isn’t really a problem – the displays aren’t TV-sized and you’re usually looking at them from a distance – but don’t expect the kind of pin-sharp clarity you might see on even budget phones. How do you get your photos onto it? This varies between each frame but generally they only need to use a very small amount of electricity.

How much electricity does a digital photo frame use?

Our favourite feature was the frame’s motion sensor that allows the screen to go into standby and recommence photo display when it detects motion. We also had it set to sleep at certain times of the day, such as when we weren't home or were watching a movie. Voice assistants aren’t just good for firing up slideshows. The Google Nest Hub Max and Facebook Portal both play nice with smart home equipment, courtesy of Google Assistant and Alexa integration respectively. A clear user interface is helpful here, making it easy to get photos on the device, add them to playlists and control how they look. How much do I need to spend?

The majority of modern frames feature in-built Wi-Fi, which they use to source slideshow images from libraries in the cloud. The process usually involves transferring your photos via partner apps or web upload tools to dedicated cloud storage, as is the case with both Nixplay and Aura frames. Some models can also connect to third-party cloud drives, such as iCloud or Google Drive, where you might already have images stored. The Netgear Meural WiFi Photo Frame is a more compact, photo-focused version of the museum-worthy Netgear Meural Canvas II. While the Canvas II excels at bringing art from the louvre to your living room, the charcoal grey WiFi Photo Frame drops the mat framing for a homier look.

Most digital photo frames offer options to tweak the display settings. If you want total control over every aspect of the visual setup – including RGB color settings, contrast, brightness and the like – you’ll want something like the Nixplay Seed Wave. And even Nixplay’s more affordable frames, such as the Nix Digital Photo Frame 8-inch, offer a range of adjustment options.
