About this deal

We do know of some other Virgin Media street furniture but have so far been unable to find any usable pictures. Suffice to say that some local streets are starting to become cluttered and yet many people will understandably struggle to identify what is actually being installed in their neighbourhood(s). As a result of that we’ve put together a simplified guide to help you identify some or all of the kit being installed.

Take note that the murky area of infrastructure leasing adds some complication to the above picture. For example, Virgin Media appears to own its entire metro area network but they also seem to lease subduct/fibre for big chunks of their long distance links (possibly via CenturyLink). Likewise Sky is known to work with both British Waterways and CenturyLink. Unlike previous set-top boxes from Virgin, the TV 360 only needs a Virgin Media broadband connection either wired or over wifi. Previous boxes relied on the same coaxial cable that delivers your broadband being routed to wherever you have your TV, which could cause some installation headaches. The fact you now only need wifi makes installation of the TV 360 much, much easier. Thanks to one of our readers (Mark), we’ve been able to get a better picture of the GPO steel cabinet with its original door (shown in the lower res image above right). See the new picture immediately to the right of this text.

Martin Lewis: What the Autumn Statement means for you – including wages, benefits, pensions, ISAs, national insurance and more Mr Devlin believes the installation of such boxes by broadband companies, should have to go through the planning process.

If Virgin Media does restrict your services, you may find that it lowers the speed of your broadband or stops access to some TV channels. This will only happen until you've paid your missed bill.FYI, I have not yet signed up to broadband/TV as I’m not living there currently whilst having some remedial work done first - is it worth signing up to VM first so I at least know that its working, and/or get VM in to make the changes as part of sign up (i’ll be a new customer). The smaller junction box on the left is often used for cable management and holding splitters in regular HFC deployments. Virgin Media is completely unique in the technology it will be bringing into your home, and thus the requirements of the installation of your services are equally unique. Sky needs to bolt a satellite dish onto your home, while most broadband providers are able to use the phone line coming into you home to get you online. Virgin Media has its own, unique cable network which uses a hybrid copper/fibre-optic coaxial cabling system – the same one that used to deliver cable TV in them olden days. Autumn Statement: State pension confirmed to rise by 8.5% from April 2024 – while some benefits will go up by 6.7%

You’ll usually find these deployed in former Exchange Only Line (EOL) areas that have been upgraded via a complex network rearrangement. In short, AIO cabinets combine both the features of a PCP cabinet above with those of the usually smaller FTTC (VDSL2) based DSLAM cabinets (i.e. phone and hybrid fibre broadband inside a single unit). Most can support 500 phone and 128 FTTC lines. Book the right slot: It may seem obvious, but you'll have to be at home when the engineer arrives to set you up. Having apoken to a fair few Virgin Media technicians in our time, we can tell you you would be amazed how many people either forget or simply book a time that was never convenient in the first place

We need to know where the cabinet is; providing a street name and post code is great, pointing out any landmarks or junctions nearby will help us ensure we're reporting the correct cabinet)A spokesperson said: “Infrastructure providers, including broadband providers, have certain permitted development rights for boxes and installations. In a few areas Virgin Media have deployed some specially modified cabinets that help to support a new system for charging electric cars ( here). We don’t know much about these but at present there are only a very few of them around. I’m confident I can undertake the work myself as i’ve done a few phone extensions and rewired coax connections but wanted peoples thoughts first? Generally this – also called a junction box – is the point where the copper or fibre optic cable comes up from the ground (assuming an underground duct deployment) and enters through the side of your property. The older boxy looking junction box is for copper lines.
