Cities that have hosted the symposium in past years include Porto (Portugal), Manchester (UK), Amsterdam, (Netherlands) and Paraty (Brazil) amongst many others. Perhaps the subtle element that differentiates urban sketching from the act of sketching on location, that artists have partaken in for decades (or centuries), is telling a story with the sketch. Thumbnail sketching is a great habit to get into and will save you a lot of time and hassle down the road if you intend to sketch a scene for an hour or more. The Symposium brings urban sketchers from around the globe to one city. A programme of workshops and talks is organised with top artists who consider themselves urban sketchers who teach on a variety of subjects. Skill Building: In this beginners course, each of the four workshops builds on the skills you learned in the previous one. So, as you progress through the course you are adding new skills while building your competence and confidence, step-by-step.

Artists who paint on location with acrylic or oil paint usually set up an easel in front of a specific scene and spend 3+ hours painting. This activity is usually referred to as plein-air painting and that’s a bit different to the idea of urban sketching. I have an entire post on some of my favourite urban sketchers, they are some of the most prominent and well-known sketchers involved in the urban sketching movement – and for good reason. Their work is incredible and hugely inspiring. Many of them have taught workshops at the Urban Sketchers Symposium, teach workshops around the world and have courses available online. Exploring Different Styles of Urban Sketching Urban sketches tend to focus on architecture or street scenes but also include drawing people in cafes, or on their daily commute and anything in between! As long as the sketch is done from life and outside of a studio setting, then that can be considered urban sketching.Whilst we love our Urban Draw social competition community, we will not be held liable to you for any losses, damages, negligence, wrongful acts, infringement of your rights, or otherwise, even if they can be predicted in advance, when connected with: I know it’s not easy to get caught up in the end result of your sketch and judge it as good as bad but if you can try to get past this and just keep going, over time, you will keep getting better and better. Your sketches will get closer to how you want or expect them to look, you will start experimenting with different techniques and mediums and you will develop your own style. In the process, you will build a collection of sketchbooks over time that is not only a record of your progress in sketching but a collection of your travels too. Examples include sketching a whole street and what happens in it, like Len Grant did in Rusholme between 2017 and 2018. Or it could be a collection of sketches done on a particular place over time, like Rolf Schroeter did with Berlin bus station’s ongoing renovation. These projects become an intense focus of activity for the sketcher, where they explore a theme through repetition. They recognise the many stories available in a particular space at various times. How to overcome complexity in urban sketching

Pencil: Ian starts this Beginner's course using a pencil, instead of a fineliner. Pencil is much more forgiving and allows you to make mistakes, rub out, and redo. It's perfect for beginners. The blank space left on the drawing was perfect for adding a short story about how the sketch came about. It enriches the drawing, helping to remember aspects like company and method of painting. Now, the memory is stronger. It is easy to remember it had been raining and we took cover here and enjoyed trying out the natural pigments to test how they worked. They sketch what they see and are dedicated to raising the profile of on-location sketching as a visual form of storytelling and reporting. Origins of the Urban Sketchers Movement And the subject you've chosen might be just as busy. You might see many houses, signs, cars, pigeons, more people. There are things lying on the floor and hanging on the walls. If you were to try and draw all that you'd need all day for just the one sketch. Be mindful and discrete, but don't overthink it. If in doubt try train stations or shopping streets, where people are busy with their own tasks and often too distracted to notice you drawing them.The main thing is to enjoy the process of urban sketching. It’s such a fantastic hobby, especially if you enjoy travelling, whether that’s exploring and discovering new areas in a 2-hour radius from your home or whether you like hopping across continents. When sketching in urban settings there are a few things to look out for. If you like your peace and quiet when working it can be a bit of a challenge to draw outside, especially in bigger towns or cities in the summertime. Usually, Urban Sketchers Chapters will organise a monthly sketchcrawl for members to spend the day sketching in a specified area, moving from one point of interest to another. Chapters may arrange events in and around and these monthly sketchcrawls but they are usually the main recurring activity.
