About this deal

But the flag created controversy when displayed next to Confederate flags in the Unite the Rights rallies in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017 ( here ). Michael White, professor of criminology at Arizona State University told the Marshall Project that the flag fosters an “us versus them mentality” which does not enhance a positive relationship between the community and law enforcement.

President Donald Trump said Monday that he’d support laws criminalizing flag burning, saying in a call with governors that it’s time for the Supreme Court to take up the issue again as nationwide protests have intensified over the death of George Floyd. America First” was also a slogan President Trump used in describing his foreign policy. Its adoption was criticized by the ADL, which said it had an anti-Semitic use seeking to keep the US out of World War II. As Americans retreated to their corners under Trump, the stars and stripes became a casualty. In extreme cases, people rejected it altogether: La Vigne once saw a tweet that showed a Confederate flag, a Nazi flag and the American flag, with text suggesting that they all had the same meaning. More commonly, people shied away from what they feared would be an association with the wrong side. In some liberal enclaves, an entirely new set of yard signs cropped up—acting as alternatives to the flag, allowing people to proclaim their belonging to a different American tribe. In Portland, Oregon, the progressive haven where he lives, Gaskins sees yard signs asserting beliefs about equality and human rights, access to clean water and racial justice. They’re “a way of trying to square both sides,” Gaskins says—declaring that “I’m proud of my country, there are things that I like about it,” but also that “there are things that need to be fixed.” None of those guys want to go live in a longhouse or anything like that. But they want that kind of imagery.”This isn't something new, [their claim that] they're being true to the actual past and that modern society somehow deviated from the way that we’re supposed to be,” says Gabriele. “In the case of the white supremacists, in case of the far right, it's a white Christian male society that doesn't leave space for women, underrepresented groups, etc. And that's something that they miss.” The Gadsden flag has appeared at other political protests, too, such as those opposing restrictions on gun ownership and objecting to rules imposed in 2020 to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Most recently the flag has been flown and displayed at some post-election protests, including events where demonstrators called for officials to stop counting votes – and both inside and outside the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., during the counting of the electoral votes on Jan. 6.

LaRussa, like many Democrats and anti-Trumpers, spent the past four years in a state of agitation. He poured his frustration onto social media, and broke ties with a close friend who had become a die-hard Trump supporter. “I’m just so infuriated at the way this country has turned out,” he told me. Flags, signs and symbols of racist, white supremacist and extremist groups were displayed along with Trump 2020 banners and American flags at Wednesday’s riot at the US Capitol. The Three Percenters (also known as III%ers, 3%ers or Threepers) are part of the militia movement in the United States and are anti-government extremists, according to the ADL. As bipartisan pressure mounted on Trump to respond, he called on rioters to be “peaceful” and “go home” but did so while repeating his false claim that the election was stolen from him and told the mob, “we love you.” A week later, the president has publicly refused any responsibility for his rhetoric and when pressed on Tuesday, he claimed his comments were “totally appropriate.”

4. Co-opted Norse mythology

During the campaign, Murray was heartened to see Biden signs throughout her community near Fort Leavenworth, which is heavy with retired military. But she also couldn’t help but notice one neighbor’s Trump sign, hung high in a tree where it couldn’t be disturbed. “I wanted to get a paintball gun and drive by it, but my sons wouldn’t let me,” she said. First there’s his zeal for restricting LGBT rights—letting states ban transgender people from using the bathroom of their gender identity, opposing the 2015 Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, his promise to appoint judges to the Supreme Court who will reverse the ruling, or his choice of one of America’s most rabidly anti-gay politicians as his vice president. Trump has hinted at support for letting businesses and individuals discriminate against LGBT people, as blogger Andy Towle notes. At the Republican National Convention, he implicitly endorsed an anti-gay GOP platform. Supporters of Joe Biden hold an impromptu car parade to celebrate the outcome of the election on November 7, 2020, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Supporters around the country took to the streets to celebrate after news outlets declared Joe Biden the winner in the U.S. presidential race.

We searched Getty Images, Associated Press Images, and various live streams of this chaotic scene, but have not seen any images of a Trump flag flying over the U.S. Capitol in the place of an American flag. We did, however, find several images of Confederate flags, Three Percenter flags, Betsy Ross flags, upside-down American flags, and, of course, Trump flags flying around the U.S. Capitol during this protest. The conflation of Trump and the flag has become so pervasive that progressives have reported feeling reluctant to buy property in areas rife with the flag. Just before the 2018 midterm elections, Bruce Watson, a writer living in western Massachusetts, lamented that liberals and progressives had “shied away from the flag.” He warned that “ceding the nation’s most enduring symbol to one party is just bad politics” and said the flag is “the symbol of ‘we, the people’ ”—including those who “staunchly oppose the president’s policies and behavior.” Watson noted, “Even if it festoons every Trump rally, the flag belongs to all of us.” What Teachout noted more than a decade ago holds true today: “The story of the flag is a story of a country in search of itself.” Tellingly, in Trump’s supposedly groundbreaking mentions of LGBT people, he isn’t actually speaking to LGBT people. To him, the community isn’t “you,” but rather ”they.“ Carr reached into his vehicle and pulled out an unopened “ TRUMP” flag, and gave it to Hartley. She accepted the gift, worrying aloud that somebody would “ride by and shoot us.” She said, “It’s so radical right now.” Other strangers were slowing down, to see what was going on. Carr, suddenly no longer alone, told one, “You bring a drink? We’re having a party!” The Post reported that “several” people said Trump talked too long and “sounded like he was rambling more in the last 30 minutes”. Trump has faced severe criticism for praising the Russian leader since the invasion began. He has also said the invasion was wrong.
