About this deal

In Dead of Winter, players are members of one such colony. The living is harsh and they must work together toward their common mission objective, while also providing enough food and supplies, fending off outside threats, and resolving other negative events that may happen on the way. On top of the common victory condition, each player also receives a secret personal objective. These may be harmless or even complementary to the main objective. But not all – some will have you weigh carefully what is more important – your interests or group interests. Then there are those where the only way to win is to turn against the colony at some point. One of the cops may in fact be a dirty cop. When using this optional rule, players are dealt a card at the start of the game letting them know if they are a dirty cop or not. It’s the dirty cop’s job to make life miserable for the other players.

There are multiple Haunt phases possible, so you never know what or who will be the one. It’s that suspense of the unknown and the inevitable twist for the second stage that keeps this game highly popular. Items that are not available in store will take 3-5 working days (excluding weekends and bank holidays) to be delivered to your nominated store. Those two get a couple more turns then if they are both still in the game, it’s time for the Traitor’s Dilemma to decide what they want to do next. Now, if you are one of the final two, you can pop your hoodie up and pretend to huddle in a stone turret a la the BBC. Or you can just take a Faithful and a Betrayal card and decide what you are in your heart; pure or devilish! They're based in convenient locations including supermarkets, newsagents and train stations. Plus they're often open late and on Sundays. The description reads: "Enter a realm of trust and treachery, where every player must navigate the shadows carefully. Among the participants, there are Traitors hidden amidst the group, ready to strike under the cover of darkness. I remember the tension and fear I experienced when I first saw the original Alien movie from 1979. It was one of the things that got me interested in sci-fi and horror, and it made Alien one of my favorite franchises. And I’m definitely not alone.

Playing with the traitor is actually optional, but highly encouraged. At the start of the game, each player is dealt a loyalty card. The card will secretly tell the player if they are the traitor or not. There are actually more cards than players, so you won’t even know if there IS a traitor. This leads to lots of suspicion, meta-gaming and social deduction. Did that player just sit and draw cards on his turn because he’s the traitor or did he really just have no actions to do. Is that player just bad at this game or actively working against us? Figuring out who the traitor is (or if there is even one) is a lot of fun. While you can play the game without a traitor, and it would certainly be easier to win, it’s way more fun with one. Days of Wonder produced an absolute gem with Shadows Over Camelot and it should be part of everyone’s gaming collection. The aim of the faithfuls is to work out who is betraying them and ‘banish’ a suspect at the roundtable each evening. Spoiler ahead: it’s safe to say they aren’t very good at finding traitors. Naturally, the combined lure of money and the paranoia of traitors lurking among them leads to drama, crying, arguing and some unlikely touching moments between contestants (72-year-old Andrea is a fan favourite). The board game allows players to fully immerse themselves in The Traitors experience as they either use their wits to unmask the traitor, or remain undetected as the traitor whilst competing alongside Faithfuls to win the prize pot. Betrayal is a ton of fun to play. The best part is no one can know who the traitor will be until it happens. That nice little girl you just gave an item to might turn around and use it to stab you in a few turns. The random party member that turns on the rest is an interesting dynamic that adds a lot of tension to the second half of the game. There have been games when the player with the most health and items suddenly turned on the party, much to the chagrin of the rest of the players. With some great components and a play time in under an hour, Betrayal is a great choice for gamers and non-gamers alike. Note: Be sure to get the green box 2nd edition of this game. The first edition had a LOT of typos in the rule book and scenario books.Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Claudia said the description of people ‘murdering’ each other in a Scottish castle also made her doubtful but she watched the Dutch version and was “interested in the psychology and how everybody gets on”.
