About this deal

UK consumers go through an estimated 14 billion plastic drinks bottles per year, according to Defra, but single-use plastic is falling out of favour thanks to efforts from David Attenborough and Greta Thunberg. More people are turning to reusable water bottles and in return, bottles are getting smarter. The best water bottles these days are insulated, leak-proof, filtered and BPA free. Waterdrop is fast joining the top names in the booming water bottle industry, with ambassadors including tennis stars Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz (Djokovic having reportedly made a fairly sizeable investment in the company). In such a saturated market, Waterdrop has come up with something slightly different to stand out: Microdrink cubes. The best size water bottle for you will depend on your needs. If you need to use it for a full day (without limited access to a source for refilling it), then a larger bottle will be important to meet your hydration needs. If you plan on bringing a bottle into the office or keeping one by your side at home, you may be able to get a smaller bottle and refill it as needed. Looks wise I can’t complain either. The Hydro Flask features a compact design with a powdered coating and a choice of nine colours. My favourite was the rain colour, a pale blue. The bottom is slightly indented in the middle for a stable base and after a month of using it, I can confirm it’s durable and keeps water ice cold.

To select the best water bottles, we first spoke with expert doctors about what to look for in a great water bottle, what materials to avoid, and what size water bottles they recommend.

The Polar Bottle Breakaway is a triple-insulated cycling bottle with a squeeze function to easily drink while on the move. It’s also ideal for those at the gym who need to access water without using their fingers to open the bottle (as your hands are often dirty from touching machines and weights). Despite being a cycling bottle, we love it for any sort of physical activity. Because it's designed to fit in a bicycle cage, it can also fit in a stationary bike cage or cardio machine cup holder at the gym. And it’s lightweight enough to carry with you during your workout. Carry out initial testing and keep records of the results - you’ll need to show these to the local authority. Take as many samples as you need to be sure your water complies with the rules. Unlike other sports bottles, it’s also beautifully designed. I love the blue linen colour (shown above). The powdered coating means it doesn’t slip, even with sweaty hands, and the ridged edging on the lid makes the cap easy to twist off. The rather large branding down the side is a turn off for me, though at least it’s subtle in colour. That said, Lululemon is a prestigious fitness brand which I imagine many would be proud to show off. Warm soapy water and a bottle brush will clean all sorts of water bottles including metal, glass and plastic. I recommend that you use fragrance-free soap, as bottles made of silicone and plastic can take on the scent of the soap. For straws, use a pipe cleaner. If a straw is removable, soak the straw at least once a week,” says Byrne.

On our mission to find the very best reusable water bottles, we paid close attention to the features that matter the most, rating each bottle on features such as ease of use, ease of cleaning and portability. It's then described as being chlorine-free, arsenic-free, fluoride-free, along with a litany of other attractive specifications. Basically, in layman's terms, this is as pure as you can find. It's also important to note that since Penta doesn't include additives, it has a natural occurring pH. If things couldn't look brighter, they also utilize solar energy to fuel the entire purification and bottling process. They’re essentially tiny granulate cubes made from natural plant and fruit extracts which are low in calories and free from sugar, artificial flavours and sweeteners. The bottles are made with a perfectly sized drinking hole to drop these cubes inside and flavour the water – hence the name, Waterdrop. YETI’s Rambler Bottle holds just over one liter of water, making it especially great for long days without easy water access to cool water. Though it may be a little too large to store in smaller-sized bags, it has a nifty handle that makes it easy to carry. Plus, we like that its size allows you to meet a significant amount of your daily hydration needs in one fell swoop. The bottle itself is made of stainless steel, offers two different sizes, and comes in both insulated and non-insulated versions. The only downside to this LARQ water bottle is that it needs to be hand-washed. Stainless steel is a reasonable option for a sustainable water bottle as it’s 100 per cent recyclable. Plastic uses oil and water in the production and releases carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, but can be more environmentally friendly if it is recycled. This means the total of all individual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons found and measured during your testing should not be more than 0.10 micrograms per litre
