About this deal

Having only been discovered in 2009, little is known about this giant tarantula but some captured individuals have recorded a leg span of at least 20cm. Their bite is likely to be painful, but not life threatening to humans, however their venom is capable of killing animals as large as rodents. Selden, P.A. (1996). "Fossil mesothele spiders". Nature. 379 (6565): 498–99. Bibcode: 1996Natur.379..498S. doi: 10.1038/379498b0. S2CID 26323977. Wolf spiders are so large and hairy that people sometimes confuse them for tarantulas. These spiders are so large that they spend their lives hunting on their own rather than constructing a web. The silk likely would not support their body weight. Instead, wolf spiders run about looking for food and shelter. Although spiders are widely feared, only a few species are dangerous to people. [111] Spiders will only bite humans in self-defense, and few produce worse effects than a mosquito bite or bee sting. [112] Most of those with medically serious bites, such as recluse spiders (genus Loxosceles) and widow spiders (genus Latrodectus), would rather flee and bite only when trapped, although this can easily arise by accident. [113] [114] The defensive tactics of Australian funnel-web spiders (family Atracidae) include fang display. Their venom, although they rarely inject much, has resulted in 13 attributed human deaths over 50 years. [115] They have been deemed to be the world's most dangerous spiders on clinical and venom toxicity grounds, [111] though this claim has also been attributed to the Brazilian wandering spider (genus Phoneutria). As the name suggests, a cellar spider’s favorite place to hang out is in your cellar or basement. There are two kinds of cellar spider: the short-bodied cellar spider and the long-bodied cellar spider. Their natural habitat ranges throughout Canada and the United States. Yeargan, K.V. & Quate, L.W. (1997). "Adult male bolas spiders retain juvenile hunting tactics". Oecologia. 112 (4): 572–76. Bibcode: 1997Oecol.112..572Y. doi: 10.1007/s004420050347. PMID 28307636. S2CID 424262. The easiest way to distinguish the two is to look at the shape and coloration of their bodies. Cellar spiders are yellow in color. They also have two separate body parts, one of which is a long, skinny abdomen. Their legs do not appear as spindly as that of the harvestmen.

Even arachnologists have a hard time identifying hobo spiders, as there are many similar looking spiders and because there is great variation within the species itself. (Image credit: CreativeNature_nl via Getty Images) While the venom of a few species is dangerous to humans, scientists are now researching the use of spider venom in medicine and as non-polluting pesticides. Spider silk provides a combination of lightness, strength and elasticity that is superior to that of synthetic materials, and spider silk genes have been inserted into mammals and plants to see if these can be used as silk factories. As a result of their wide range of behaviors, spiders have become common symbols in art and mythology symbolizing various combinations of patience, cruelty and creative powers. An irrational fear of spiders is called arachnophobia. Levi, Herbert W. and Levi, Lorna R. (2001) Spiders and their Kin, Golden Press, pp. 20, 44. ISBN 1582381569 Sometimes, these spiders will find their way into your home on their own. More likely, though, they will be carried in on any firewood or plants you bring in.
