About this deal

In June 2011 Landy posted on his blog that he would be writing a short story about Skulduggery called The End of the World. [29] It was released in late February 2012 to coincide with World Book Day 2012. The Australian release of this novella came with an additional short story titled Just Another Friday Night. Deleted scenes from Skulduggery Pleasant were included. It is set a few months after Death Bringer. It was included in the 2014's short story collection.

It is exhausting to read this book because I feel like the rushed pace and slapdash editing really makes it impossible to examine it based on the actual story. idk! idk. I had fun! that counts for something! but these books *need* more time. and more people reading the drafts! In ye olden days of Phase 1, Derek’s best friend read every book before publication and fans eagerly awaited the tweet or blogpost saying she had finished. She didn’t mince words and would explicitly tell Derek what she didn’t like (she was on record as disliking the zombies and convincing Derek to alter the scene between China and Fletcher in DD.) Derek says she hasn’t done that for phase 2.... and I wonder if now being surrounded like yes men like his editor is hurting his creative process. Derek Landy delivers the deliciously spine-tingling conclusion to the second cycle of his hugely popular series” - Waterstones, Best Books of the Year 2022 Ultimately, I think Landy has his eyes fixed on Omen, as he plans for Omen to become a new lead character. Being in his last year (or something like that), he will probably graduate from Corrival soon, and face the wide world. As he has developed new fighting, leading, and investigation skills, he could potentially become a new detective / arbiter, like Valkyrie. The anti-climatic ending of the Faceless ones, and the whole 'I-want-to-be-better-than-skulduggery' mindset of Crepuscular Vies, made it clear that it wasn't about Crepuscular, or about The Faceless Ones. Obviously Skulduggery and Valkyrie once again had the main roles, but the other plotlines really prepared Omen for the role of a detective, as he grew to become an independent person. Landy, Derek (30 March 2023). "So I am meeting Derek Landy again tomorrow — does anyone here have any questions they would like me to ask on their behalf?". Reddit . Retrieved 30 March 2023. Derek Landy: Everyone also had Harry Potter wands, Skulduggery having a wand that was a magnifying glass to focus his fire.

In July 2016, Derek Landy announced via a video blog that, although the Skulduggery Pleasant series was complete, the series as a whole was still set to continue with a sequel series. The first book of this sequel was released in June 2017, titled Resurrection. [2] While nine books were planned, the series was cut down to six books by HarperCollins after the publication of Seasons of War. The final book, Until the End, was released in April 2022. [3] In October 2022, Landy announced via YouTube livestream that a "one-off prequel" and "Book 0·1", Hell Breaks Loose, would release in March 2023. [4]

[ permanent dead link] A spin-off novel featuring Tanith Low taking place between the seventh and eighth books was released on 28 March 2013 in the U.K & Ireland and 1 April in other countries. The cover and title ( Tanith Low in... The Maleficent Seven: From the World of Skulduggery Pleasant) were released on 7 December 2012 after several delays, with Landy stating it to be his favourite book cover ever. Skulduggery Pleasant is a series of dark fantasy novels written by Irish author Derek Landy. Tom Percival is the series' illustrator. The books revolve around the adventures of fledgling detective Valkyrie Cain and her mentor Skulduggery Pleasant, along with other friends and allies. The central story concerns Valkyrie's struggle to stop evil forces threatening the world and her internal struggle to resist the darkness within.I had very mixed feelings about this book. For one, nostalgia for a once great series I used to read/listen to on repeat. On the other hand however, there was this descend into chaos I already noticed increasingly in the other novel of the second era. There were some ideas and themes I liked, others I didn't enjoy as much. But altogether, I felt there was just too much going on with too little time and setup. I feel like some plot elements would have profited from the book either being longer or - even better - not setting up as much in one book. One negative point throughout the second era for me also was how Derek Landy keeps pulling lore from Skulduggery's past without proper setup and in huge quantities. I realise the guy's centuries old, but I always enjoyed his past being somewhat of a mystery and feel like other reveals - notably, for example, the Lord Vile reveal in the first era - were much more planned out than all the revelations of Skulduggery's and other character's pasts and relationships/family trees. I did like the reveal that Omen was Sebastian all along but again, it felt a bit rushed. And my heart did melt quite a bit at the return of Ghastly Bespoke. Three-hundred years before the story begins... the story begins. Set in Tuscany, Italy, 1703, during the War, Hell Breaks Loose focuses on an enraged Skulduggery, 13 years after being killed with his wife and child by Serpine and resurrected as a living skeleton, and three years after his five years as Lord Vile, as he and the Dead Men hunt down Serpine and Vengeous, the Generals of Mevolent. During the fight with Serpine in the Sanctuary, Stephanie glimpsed her True name in the Book of Names but could not remember it before the Book of Names was destroyed. Skulduggery destroyed Serpine with the Scepter, breaking the Scepter's power in the process. Afterward, Skulduggery offered to take Stephanie on as his assistant and apprentice because she is a descendant of the Ancients. Stephanie decided to take the name of Valkyrie Cain. Set between Mortal Coil and Death Bringer, the novella Apocalypse Kings was published in February 2021.

Once again Landy has to make it clear to the audience that he’s been paying attention to current events! Just like how the refugee crisis stopped being majorly relevant in this series when it came out of the news cycle, the previous book’s half hearted attempt to examine police brutality was no longer a factor in this one. It was on to pandemic parallels now! However, the way that he was using the phrase ‘in these uncertain times’, as well as other phrases and concepts that draw parallels with the reality of the last two years, made me suspicious about Landy’s opinions of mask requirements. To be clear about my stance, mask requirements are a good thing and have undoubtedly saved lives. I haven’t been keeping a close eye on Landy’s social media because I have better things to do with my time, but based on this book alone I’m getting anti-masker vibes, and that’s yikes. Maybe it was unintentional on his part, but you can’t take the beginning of a parallel and not expect your reader to see it through to the end. Short Story Collection". Derek Landy Blogs Under Duress. 16 November 2013 . Retrieved 10 October 2014.The other reveals, namely, Solace's parentage, weren't really dealt with as well, but oh well. A lot of people saw it coming, and that entire plotline was a bit of a mess. The way he built up the Corrival Academy's authoritarian environment was boring to read, as it was predictable that the students would revolt, and the principal toppled. Nothing interesting to be honest, though it did change Omen's character, as he developed leadership skills, and he realized that he can be much more, if only he has more confidence and a higher self-esteem. Never, Axelia, and Kase following his lead, and showing their confidence in Omen, really developed his character from the shy, failing student, to the leader Auger once was. Skulduggery author, Derek Landy on the accidental reveal of the ending of his new book". Irish Examiner. 25 March 2021. I had hoped there would be more scenes with Skulduggery's siblings, as they seem like very intelligent fellows, with the same sarcastic and stupid humour as Skulduggery does. Peccant being Skulduggery's brother surprised me, but I guess Landy will just make up new stuff as he goes along. The new Skulduggery book 14 Dead or Alive was released in April 2021 and an illustrated compendium The Skulduggery Pleasant Grimoire in May 2021.

Longer novel section for year 8/9 pupils". Portsmouth.gov.uk. Archived from the original on 5 August 2012 . Retrieved 18 November 2012. Most concerning of all, you said this “might be the best Skulduggery book”. was this for ego stroking, or have you recently suffered a concussion and forgot that Death Bringer exists? (.... and TDOTL and KOTW and DD and LSODM and TFO and MC and PWF and—) I was rooting for Valkyrie’s death for the first half of the book. This isn’t necessarily a positive or negative statement, and I think the decision to write her in this way was a genuinely interesting one. It just made for a strange reading experience to be wanting the main character of the whole series dead for such a long time. The obsidian plotline seemed very annoying at first, because the biggest concern was obviously the Faceless Ones, and the monsters they unleashed on the Earth. The way Obsidian completely ended the universe, wasn't really surprising, as Darquesse had done it before in phase 1, and it was just like what I had expected; an ending where all characters were killed off, in some worldwide apocalypse. It's exciting, pacy, nicely handled and fun. I sincerely hope Landy revisits these characters.' Philip Ardagh, Guardian -

Customer reviews

If this review feels like a disjointed mess, then at least it matches the book that it’s a review of. I’ll discussing specific plot points after a certain point, but I’ll make it clear when that’s about to begin. The novels are broken up into two phases with multiple prequels and short tales. Since the release of the first novel in 2007, Skulduggery Pleasant, the series has been praised by both readers and critics. Hugely enjoyable - a thrill-a-minute adventure.'
