About this deal

The Silhouette Portrait 3 is considered the little brother of the Silhouette Cameo. It’s about 30% smaller and about 1/3 of the weight. It can cut all the same materials as the Cameo 3. It has an automatic tool detection blade; auto tool detection is a new feature on the portrait 3 and cameo 4. It allows the Silhouette Studio software to automatically detect what tools are inserted into your machine. This ensures the right cut settings every time. One area where the Silhouette Cameo 4 wins out is cutting pressure. With 5000gf (gram force) / 5kg, it has an extra 25% on Cricut Maker 3's 4000gf / 4kg. It also has a higher cutting clearance of 3mm to Cricut's 2.4mm. Sign in to the silhouette machine set up online and you will see your machines. If you only have a Silhouette Portrait you will only see one. If you also own a Silhouette Cameo you will see this too.

Bluetooth Capatability! The Portrait 3 has a Bluetooth pre-installed and is Bluetooth compatible. This means that you can cut jobs on the go wirelessly with Bluetooth and no USB cord. Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. It works only in coordination with the primary cookie.

Plus Silhouette has just released an app, Silhouette Go App, that allows you to use your smartphone or tablet with your cutting machine. Bluetooth connection makes it possible to use these devices with your cutting machine and the app. Portrait 3 Blades and Tools First, the Portrait 3 comes with a new tool chamber that houses the new AutoBlade. This tool chamber is similar to that of the Tool 1 chamber on the Cameo 4. This chamber allows the software to automatically detect what tool you are using and instantly adjust your cut settings. Can I use my old Silhouette tools with the Portrait 3? The Portrait 3 has a Bluetooth® adapter preinstalled and is Bluetooth® compatible. This means that your Portrait 3 can receive cut jobs via Bluetooth without a connection to a USB cord, so it allows for wireless communication. Driven by Silhouette Studio® grams is more than enough to cut the most common types of materials like paper and vinyl. In fact, the Cameo 4’s carriage 1 has 210 grams of force as well. I’ll get more into what the Portrait 3 can cut a little bit later in the article.

The machine's cutting pressure ensures it can slice through most materials from paper to wood and even leather. Engraving and embossing can be achieved, and it can perform delicate pen work. In our Cricut Maker 3 review we found this to be one of the best cutting machines we've used to date, and easily a step up from past Cricuts. More power doesn't always mean better results. When cutting craft materials such as balsa wood, for example, you get a cleaner cut from several passes at varying pressures rather than one punch, which is Cricut's approach with Maker 3. Not only does Silhouette Studio feature stylish designs, but it also provides customizable settings to perfectly match your project specifications.

Creative Play

The Silhouette Portrait 3 has all of the great features of the Portrait 2 (some of which I pointed out above) plus a couple of brand new features. New Portrait 3 Tool Chamber Which you choose in the Maker 3 vs Cameo 4 debate will come down to your skill level and projects. Cameo 4 is a powerful machine with a feature-rich but complex software, and its limited range of accessories could leave you wanting more. The Silhouette Portrait 3 offers a whole host of incredible features that will transform your DIY and craft projects! The compact cutting machine comes with cutting-edge updates, offering both automatic tool detection and matless cutting capabilities. The machine uses Silhouette Studio Software technology and Bluetooth connectivity, helping you bring every idea to life with ease. It is also compatible with PixScan mats, available separately, for print and cut jobs. The Portrait 3 has a cutting force of 210 grams which when compared to the Cameo 4 (5000 gf) and Cricut Maker (4000 gf) may not seem like a lot it’s actually the same force as the Cameo 3 and not that much less than the Cricut Explore Air 2 (350 gf).

The Portrait 3 is a great choice if you are looking for a more compact crafting tool at a great price that still has lots of features. Let’s talk about just a few of my favorite things about the Portrait 3, shall we? A couple of my favorite Portrait 3 features: Tawk.to, a live chat functionality, sets this cookie. For improved service, this cookie helps remember users so that previous chats can be linked together. Basically, while the Portrait 3 cuts, it will occasionally lift the blade leaving tiny portions of the design uncut so the piece remains connected to the sheet of material. Then, when you are done cutting, you simply pop the finished design out of your material! It’s really kind of cool. Why/When is Pop-out Cut Helpful? Cricut, by contrast, offers a more expansive range of tools, 13 in total compared to Silhouette's five. You can use the Rotary Blade, Knife Blade, Scoring Wheels, Foil Transfer Tool, and more when you buy them as part of a bundle or direct from the Cricut store. The machine comes with a Premium Fine Point Blade as standard. (Read our guide to the best Cricut blades for more details.) With these adjustable features, you can modify the cutting speed and depth as well as choose from three styles: scoring, cutting, or perforating- guaranteeing unparalleled and exact results for your project.

Silhouette Portrait 3

Cricut's Design Space is good for newcomers, but Silhouette's software, Silhouette Studio, is more complex (Image credit: Cricut) Silhouette Portrait 3 next to the Silhouette Cameo 3 size comparison How to set up your Silhouette portrait 3 On the surface each brand has a very similar machine and bespoke software, which we will look at in more detail. You can see an overview in our comparison chart above that reveals these are close in most aspects, which is why deciding on why is right for you, Cricut or Silhouette, can be hard.
