About this deal

The Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus may be Samsung’s headline-grabbers, but they’re hardly accessible to the average consumer. And that’s where the new Galaxy A Series phones come in. I’ve just been to the ”A Galaxy Event” in Milan and got early access to Samsung’s latest string of mid-range handsets, including the fascinating Galaxy A80, which has a rotating triple camera. Thirdly, and more importantly, the section feels rather fragile. When it’s down, you can shake it and wiggle it without much work so it rattles about in its casing, and when it’s up, you can easily flip and fiddle with the rotating panel, causing the phone to freak out and close the camera app.

Weighing in at 220g, the Galaxy A80 is one of the heaviest phones we’ve seen – it’s not quite the 232g of the Huawei Mate 20 X, but it’s a lot heavier than most other devices. In comparison, the Galaxy A50 is a relatively dinky 166g. The Samsung Galaxy A80 is a chunky device, both in terms of size and weight, and it’s probably not great for someone who wants a nimble phone that’s easy to hold in one hand.

Over the course of our review we started to feel rather nervous using the pop-up section because of its frailty – we all know what happened to the Samsung Galaxy Fold, and didn’t want to recreate it by breaking the moving parts of the A80 too. Display

An obvious issue does appear though and I’ve had this concern with all slider phones so far: durability. I can’t imagine this coping well with a drop on a hard surface and once the sliding mechanism fails, the phone will likely become unusable. Long-term use also raises the question of how well the mechanism will last 2/3 years down the line. Memory size: User memory is less than the total memory due to storage of the operating system and software used to operate the phones features. Actual user memory will vary depending on the mobile phone operator and may change after software upgrades are performed. There is a range of features in the settings menu that let you adapt the screen quality to your particular preferences too, like adding a blue light filter or dark mode, or tweaking the RGB colors of the screen. Main Camera: Triple 48 MP, f/2.0, 26mm (wide), 1/2″, 0.8µm, PDAF; 8 MP, f/2.2, 12mm (ultrawide), 1.12µm; TOF 3D camera, f/1.2, 30mmUnique Pop-up camera mechanism: This undoubtedly remains the most unique feature this smartphone boasts. Samsung Galaxy A80 features a staggering rotating camera. The main point of these rotating cameras is so users can utilize the same amazing cameras on the rear of the phone, and in front for selfies. If you are a photo lover and a fan of great pictures, then you will be especially excited with this smartphone. Samsung has now officially confirmed the Galaxy A80 price and release date. This is the first smartphone from the company with a sliding, rotating camera. Earlier reports had claimed that this device would be launched as the Galaxy A90. That's not the case, though, it's going to be called the Galaxy A80. We made sure to turn on Vivid mode in the settings menu – as the name suggests this makes colors more vivid, although perhaps a little less natural, but it still makes games and media more appealing. Now onto what you want to hear about – the pop-up rotating camera section. It’s a fun novelty, for sure, but it feels like less of a useful solution to the notch problem than other pop-ups like on the OnePlus 7 Pro or Oppo Reno 10x Zoom.

When the pop-up camera panel is down it shook and rattled as though it was loose, which is far from a good sign on a smartphone that should last us years.

The company has unveiled the device at an event in Bangkok today. We were on the ground and have already gone hands-on with the Galaxy A80. It's a pretty solid premium mid-range device with a unique camera that sets it apart from the competition. Keeping the phone (hopefully) running all day is a 3700mAh battery – that’s larger than both the S10 and S10 Plus – along with 25W fast charging via the USB-C port. Fast charging is always nice and this is actually faster than you’ll find on the S10. If you thought the Galaxy S10 played it somewhat safe with its iterative design then you might be interested in the A80, as it’s far more of a risk-taker. This means that users get to utilize the powerful primary camera system for selfies. It has a 48-megapixel primary sensor with an 8-megapixel Ultra-Wide and even a 3D Depth camera. The entire camera system becomes available when the front camera is trigged in an app. The slider moves up and the camera system rotates to face the user.
