About this deal

Richard Starkey was born on 7th July 1940 and was the old man of the Fab Four, if only by three months. Restricted by ill health in his childhood, he missed more than a year of school when his appendix burst just before his seventh birthday. His Physical Training teacher from Dingle Vale Secondary Modern, Mr. Dawson, remembered one of his rare moments of sporting prowess: “He was always wanting to do the same things as the other boys,” he said, “and I remember one incident which typifies this. It was during the middle of a P.T. lesson. All the class were jumping over the vaulting-horse in the centre of the gym. When it came to Ringo’s turn, he was obviously pretty doubtful whether he would get over the obstacle because he had never done it before. He ran up to it, jumped, and just managed to clear it. When he found that he had succeeded and not fallen flat, his face burst into a really broad, satisfiedgrin.” Sad to say, this may very well be his only achievement from eleven years at school. In fact, when he returned from 18 months in hospital, the school couldn’t find his records. However, Dawson observed what happened once Ringo had become famous: “Recently the school put an old desk of Ringo’s up for sale. We had thousands of girls queuing up to try and buy it. He has certainly helped to make Dingle Vale School famous.” (Beatles Book Monthly 28) Unlike his earlier albums, Starr opted not to enlist an array of famous musician friends to guest on Ringo The 4th. Instead his collaborators included Vini Poncia, with whom Starr wrote the majority of the album’s songs. The new kit was Richy’s greatest ever Christmas present, and although it was was a lot of money to the family, it was an investment in a career that would make him one of the most famous faces on the planet and one of the most respected drummers in the history of popular music. As he remembered: “I got the drum kit on Boxing Day and was in a group by February, so there wasn’t a chance in hell that I could play by then. But neither could anyone else, except the guitarist, who knew a couple of chords.” (Anthology) Harry, Bill (2004). The Ringo Starr Encyclopedia. London: Virgin Books. p.184. ISBN 978-0-7535-0843-5. The album was not a commercial success, and peaked at number 28 on the US Billboard 200. It failed to chart in the UK, but reached 19 in Australia, and 35 in Canada.

I’d also like to state, and probably not for the last time, that the whole “Nobody’s Favorite” thing is not my original idea; it’s been used by a couple of bloggers of my acquaintance before, most notably David Weiss and “Calamity” Jon Morris. But not for albums, and that’s where I’m planting my little flagpole. So let’s go.I Am Missing You” is a song by Indian musician Ravi Shankar, sung by his sister-in-law Lakshmi Shankar and released as the lead single from his 1974 album “Shankar Family & Friends”. The song is a rare Shankar composition in the Western pop genre, with English lyrics, and was written as a love song to the Hindu god Krishna.

I will never understand the hatred for this album. Is it Ringo’s best album? No. Is it the worst album ever recorded by a solo Beatle, as it’s often said to be? No, not at all. I think that this is a GREAT album. Ringo remembered the excitement of getting his first drum, which he said “came on the scene about this time. I bought a drumfor thirty shillings. It was a huge, one-sided bass drum. There usedto be lots of parties then. An uncle would play banjo or harmonica,my grandparents played mandolin and banjo. There was alwayssomeone playing something. So I would bang my big drum withtwo pieces of firewood and drive them mad, but because I was akid they would let me do it.” (Anthology) Mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios and Capitol Records in Hollywood, CA, this amazing album will also be manufactured for a very limited time on first time 180 Gram Audiophile Translucent Gold Vinyl! When the Gene Vincent show came to the Liverpool Stadium in May 1960, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes were on the stage, while John, Paul,George and Stuart could only look on from the audience with envy. When the Cavern Club held its first Beat Night in May 1960, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes was the first beat band to play there. With Rory celebrated as one of the top showmen in the city, the group’s reputation was second to none. The Silver Beatles at that time didn’t even have a regular drummer. In December 1964, The Beatles Book Monthlyfirst used the term “Fourth Beatle”. “Ringo is usually known as the 4th Beatlebecause he joined the group a mere two years ago. I think he is quieter than the others because of this fact.” They also observed that Ringo“tended to be the ‘odd man out’as the boys returned from their highly successful tour of Scotland with Helen Shapiro. He still felt he was a new boy.” He rarely talked about the early days either. “Come off it, nobody’s interested in all that. It’s the other three who matter, not me.” (Beatles Book Monthly December 1964)Wooley, Hayden (7 July 2015). "Oeuvre Here: An 18-album Voyage Through Ringo Starr's Discography". Drowned in Sound. Overall, I really can’t find anything negative to say about this album. The closest I can think of is that “Gypsies In Flight” sounds kind of out of place since it’s a country song, but it doesn’t sound any more out of place on here than the country songs on Ringo’s previous albums. It’s also a great song, so I really don’t mind its inclusion either way. So, I can’t help but wonder if the only reason this album is hated is due to it being the album where Ringo changed his musical direction. That, coupled with the terrible album cover of and the fact that the album was a major commercial failure may have to do with why it’s looked upon with so much negativity today. At the end of the day, I think it’s a great album. It’s no masterpiece, but it’s still an incredibly underrated collection of songs that most people unfortunately don’t give a chance. If it had been released by someone other than Ringo, then I’m sure praising it wouldn’t even be controversial. The album was recorded at Sunset Sound Studios and Cherokee Studios in Los Angeles. In addition to the 11 songs, outtakes included ‘Where Are You Going’, ‘All Right’, ‘Party’, and ‘It’s Hard To Be Lovers’.
