About this deal

All breadmakers use a paddle to mix the dough. On most machines, this leaves a hole in the base of the loaf. Not the Sage. The clever design on this model has a collapsible paddle meaning no hole and indeed, the perfect loaf. This setting won’t always be suitable if you’re baking with ingredients that can spoil, such as eggs. Up to 13 hours is average, which includes the time the bread takes to be made. A default keep warm is a handy option if you’re not around to take the bread out. This maintains enough heat inside the pan to prevent condensation being absorbed by the loaf as it cools.

What’s especially good about this model is that it’s sleek enough to have out on the worktop. As well as a brushed stainless-steel exterior to help prevent fingerprints and a large viewing window, there’s a touchscreen instead of buttons and an LCD display. Annoyingly, the display only stays lit while it’s being programmed, so it’s hard to see at a glance how much time it has left, especially on a sunny day.

Panasonic Breadmaker Spares

We also baked a gluten-free loaf in the bread machine, following a recipe included in the instructions. This had a crunchy crust that was well browned, but the bread itself had a cake-like texture – although this is to be expected from a gluten-free bake.

We were very impressed with every loaf the Panasonic SD-YR2540 turned out. We made white, fruit, wholemeal and supermarket bread-mix loaves in the appliance, all of which came out with a crisp, evenly browned crust, with the bread itself soft and fluffy. Upon slicing the raisin bread, it was clear that the bread maker had done an excellent job of evenly distributing the fruit into the bread dough. This Panasonic bread machine bakes a wonderful loaf with zero fuss. Pop the ingredients in the pan, set the timer and wake up to the smell of fresh bread – yum! As we’ve already mentioned, the SD-YR2540 is one of Panasonic’s first ‘horizontal’ bread makers, meaning it won’t take up the whole depth of your countertop. However, measuring 40.8 x 25.2 x 36.2cm (w x d x h), it still requires a fair amount of space. The 4.5cm display on the right-hand side displays the preset selected, chosen using the buttons below it, alongside the remaining time, chosen loaf size and browning level of the crust. This bread maker was used to make a 1.5lb white loaf on the basic programme. While it wasn’t too noisy, it beeped loudly when it was ready for extras. The action isn’t shown on the display so first-time bakers might wonder what it wants. When it comes to the bread I baked, the SD-2511 was all about consistency. Using standard Tesco strong flour, white, wholemeal and raisin breads all came out perfectly shaped, and I had no problems with bread rising too much and collapsing, as on other bread makers I’ve tested. Plus, with 31 programmes, you can bake anything & everything – from your basic loaf to whole wheat, rye & sourdough, plus, brioche, cake, jam and pizza dough. There are four gluten-free programmes too. Jam and yogurt: Other non-bread functions on certain models include jams, compotes and yogurt. Try our peach & amaretto jam recipe or garlic yogurt, and read our guide on how to sterilise jars for jams and preserves. ONS Government data shows the average 800g loaf has increased by over 20% year on year (Oct 22). Today, a delicious homemade loaf out of a bread machine costs less than half the supermarket equivalent. All machines will grow warm on the outside as they bake but some will be hotter than others. How long will each loaf take to make?
