Georgette Heyer is one of my favourite writers. She taught me so much history, and fantasizing about her macho Regency heroes made boarding school much more bearable. I loved setting the Prologue in Mount! in the eighteenth century, because here lies the key to the whole story. But I couldn’t keep it up for an entire book, I rely on modern slang too much. On the other hand, I adore anachronisms. I can’t remember which film it was when some warrior bellowed: ‘Men of the Middle Ages, let us go forth and fight the Hundred Years’ War!’ After bumping into an old school friend, Gussie, and falling for her fiancé, Jeremy, Octavia is invited to spend the weekend with them on their canal boat. Characteristically, she convinces herself that Jeremy cannot possibly have real affection for the overweight and clumsy Gussie, and she is determined to win Jeremy by the end of the weekend. But when Jeremy invites Welsh firebrand Gareth Llewellyn along for the ride, Octavia finds her plans disrupted in more ways than one. I’m so old, I don’t know about Tinder and dating apps. Isn’t Tinder the one that has something called ‘likes’? I’m sure Rupert, Billy and Rannaldini would get lots of those. Today I read about speed-dating, that you have to decide whether you want to get off with someone in four minutes. In my day, we had the four-minute-mile and admired Roger Bannister hugely for achieving it. Today you have four-minute-males! I don’t think Rupert would need to bother with the Internet because women are always throwing themselves at him. Taggie gets a bit of a raw deal here. Long-time fans may regret one of the major storylines, which may ruin some of the characters for you if you like your romances "safe" (and given Appassionata, feels a bit out-of-character). Mount! is NOT "safe". It's also not very fairytale-ending unlike some of the others, though of course it ends reasonably happily for all the progatonists.

Rupert finally learns some important life lessons and things come out very well for him in the end (I do not want to spoil it for any of my fellow Jilly Cooper fans so I will let you read it for yourself). Television adaptations of Cooper's novels are relatively few but have been accepted by national network ITV. The big news is that Rupert C-B is now – drumroll – in his late 50s. Don’t make a family tree (he’s theoretically a great-grandfather), obviously, but making him 59 keeps him within the realms of contemporary fanciability, when you consider that Mark Carney is 51, Obama 55, and Mark Rylance and Robert Peston both 56. Horses also hold a lot of the dynastic energy, as each prized thoroughbred sires another who looks just like him and wins stuff. Yet, in the end, they are dispensable; they can be bitten to death by other horses (Love Rat in Mount!) without disrupting the fundamentally romantic atmosphere.
