About this deal

The struggle here is it can be hard to read the raised numbers, especially if you’re wrenching in a poorly lit hotel room, or adjusting a saddle bolt upside down. It’s comfortable to use, but the hollow plastic construction certainly feels cheap and can lead to clearance issues in rare cases. Safety should always come first. You should never skimp when buying bicycle gear because it could one day save your life. You (hopefully) would never cut corners on your helmet, so you shouldn’t act any differently to the rest of your gear.

Precision Torque Measurement - Install components with calibrated precision - 2.0 to 20.0 Newton Meter torque range with micro adjustment to 0.1. Helps ensure that the fittings on your bike are tightened to the correct torque, and that clamping forces are distributed evenly across clamping surfaces. This helps prolong the life of high-performance components and prevents damage from over tightening. Ideal for use on stems, seat clamps, lever clamps, chain sets, rotors and headsets. If you don't own a torque wrench, get one. Bike manufacturers often tell us about people who have written off components or even frames by overtightening bolts. Gulp! It won't happen to you? I hope you're right, but even very experienced mechanics shouldn't rely on feel when going just a touch too heavy can result in a parts failure. The ‘Deluxe’ tool wrap and bits are great quality and it even includes a free calibration service (in Italy…). All wrapped up, it’s compact and doesn’t waste space in the toolbox. Even so, the kit looks the part when you open it up and the main body of the tool is very satisfying to hold. Its tactile nature had me testing the torque of multiple bolts on my bike just to be able to use it again. Next up, Santa Cruz has shown off its latest Tallboy. This time, the Santa Cruz Tallboy 5 gets suspension upgrades and geometry tweaks, bringing it up to date with the rest of the range - and the women-specific version, Juliana Joplin has had the same updates.

Torque wrench types

Effectively the same as the LifeLine Professional but at a higher price, the PRO Torque Wrench is a fuss-free option if found at a good price David Rome / Immediate Media However, estimating torque can be a risky business and if it goes wrong, you’ve not got much hope of a warranty swap. What types of torque wrench sets are available?

Once a warranty claim has been placed we will review the claim and advise on an appropriate course of action, please do not return your item until you have spoken to an advisor. Some at-home-mechanics might skip the torque wrench, in favour of adjusting bolts ‘on feel’. When you’ve tightened a lot of bolts, you’ll have a good idea what 4Nm and 6Nm might feel like. Not using a torque wrench puts you at risk of a bolt snapping, or indeed a delicate, carbon component giving way or being crushed under too much pressure. In the case of a handlebar, this can be dangerous; and if it’s proven that you’d overtightened a bolt and caused the fracture then your chances of a warranty claim could be voided. Terms & Conditions Apply. There are hundreds upon hundreds of brands in bicycling. From budget to billionaire worthy, the range in prices can vary significantly. Most bikes and accessories are covered by a standard manufacturer's warranty but please be aware that there are faults/issues that are NOT covered by your warranty. This includes; Hey, that looks just like the LifeLine Professional or the Pedro’s Demi,” I hear you say. Yep, there’s a good reason for that – it’s the same. Sourced from Taiwan, this Shimano/PRO item is a rebadged tool, but there’s a good reason so many brands put their label on it – it does exactly what it should. It works like a beam-type torque wrench and so you stop tightening once the needle hits the desired number.

You might be a cycling newbie or a relative De-France competitor, but anyone can fall victim to the common buying mistakes when it comes to cycling gear. Unfortunately, while the internet makes shopping easier than ever before, it has also increased the difficulty for newcomers to discern the good from the bad. The story that's got us really interested is Stu's Surly Ghost Grappler review. Why is it so exciting, I hear you ask? Well, it's a steel-framed gravel/adventure bike that's designed for comfort over long distances. Interestingly, it's been designed around the handlebar position. Scoring four stars, it's well worth a read. Sometimes we aren’t always able to store a bike in a warm, safe place. People living in shared accommodation, student housing, flats or other types of arrangements may not be allowed to keep their bicycle in communal areas (where space is usually the biggest). A preset torque wrench looks much like a normal Allen key, with a handle. It will tighten the bolt to the ideal tension. These are light and easy to transport, as well as being highly accurate since they can’t be adjusted. The tool has been calibrated at the factory. You get a little Certificate of Calibration that gives you its accuracy, and it can be recalibrated further down the line.

It comes in a foam-lined hard plastic case, something we found tough to actually get the tool out of. However, it does keep it safe and all the bits together. As we say above, price is the most common top consideration for people buying cycling gear…the same goes for buying Cycling.
