About this deal

So the answer is really quite simple. Baking beans are either dry uncooked beans or ceramic/metal beads used to keep your pie shape during blind baking. This is especially important if you’re making something like a quiche because it needs to stay contained within its own boundaries during cooking time otherwise it may end up leaking over into another dish while they cook together inside your oven! Meringue Powder Most of all, they simply make a great side dish for almost anything, and they're conveniently vegan. Without baking beans, pre-baking a pie or crust can cause what is fondly referred to in the baking world as a “soggy bottom”.

These are basically just round little ceramic discs with holes in them for air circulation during baking (just like real pie weights). In an age of increasingly global flavours, a taste for tangy, tomatoey tinned beans – and salty Marmite or sawdusty rich tea biscuits – marks you out as an unmistakable product of the British Isles. They may be an American creation, made with New World legumes and Native American roots, but even in Boston, the epicentre of American enthusiasm for the baked bean, you won't find beans fit to grace a slice of toast. All you need to do is preheat your oven to the desired temperature and then coat the bottom and sides of your pie crust with meringue powder. Pour three and a half litres of cold water into a large bowl or pan, stir in the salt to dissolve, then add the beans; contrary to received wisdom, adding salt to uncooked beans does not make them tough, but instead helps them go extra creamy. Leave them to soak at room temperature for between eight and 12 hours. 3 Drain and cook the beans

Dissolve the salt in 3.5 litres of water and add the beans. Leave to soak for at least eight hours, then drain and rinse. Put in a large pan and cover with fresh water. Bring to the boil, skim off the scum that rises to the top, then turn down the heat and simmer until just tender but not falling apart (how long will depend on the age of your beans). STEP 4. Season to taste, remove from the heat and serve your British baked beans for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. STORAGE The metal chains will allow air to escape from underneath so that your crust doesn’t get soggy or burn, but it will also prevent any potential leakage from occurring as well because it covers up all sides so nothing can leak out!

What Can You Use as an Alternative to Baking Beans?

You can buy dry beans at any nearby grocery store. Pie weights can be found at a baking supply store or online. What can I use if I don’t have baking beans? Season to taste (you can add more ketchup if you like, I won't judge), then add the beans and simmer for 15 minutes. Add a knob of butter before serving if you're feeling particularly decadent.
