Zander and Romeria: I wish we had more private time with these two. But I understood why they spent so much time apart. They both needed the distance for Romy to grown and for Zander to let her do that. When she's on a job, a mysterious woman who knows all about her employment proposes a different job opportunity for her. Restricted to her criminal boss, she declines this offer and leaves the lavish party.
As said before the world building is captivating and in general is something to be commended. It has all the elements of what makes a good fantasy, great. It has lore, a unique magic system, supernatural races, Gods or Fates and is complex but easy to grasp a handle on.
Gifted thief Romeria steals jewels under a notorious New York City crime boss. But when an enigmatic woman secures her services at swordpoint, Romeria is wrenched from this world and transported into a realm of opposing thrones, warring elven societies and elemental magic. The heroine is feisty and complex and struggling to make it by in a world she doesn't understand. I love how her natural ability and strength is obvious, but her control of the power is clearly minimal. Sometimes I find that a characters ability to wield new magic feels underdeveloped, but that's not the case here. for all of the questions we start this book with, thieves and chaos still very much feels like a book that sets up the plot for the next one. while we get some answers, you’ll end this one with the feeling that there’s still so much left to discover. Jarek and Romeria: The hate between them was a thing, but their relationship has changed and I adore how this surly warrior will now do anything for his queen. Their banter is perfection. After finding her boss dead, as well as his henchmen, the mysterious woman, Sofie, whisks Romy away to her mansion, where she's given the immediate task of returning her husband to her.
This features a portal fantasy, with meddling gods, body swapping, vampires(?), elemental magic, and a prophecy that won't be broken. But… over all, this is one of the best stories I’ve read in some time! The time taken to build up these characters and the attention to detail without overloading the reader was done so well. She would know the world of vengeful gods and monsters, and the lengths one would go for love. And nothing would ever be the same for her again.
This is my currently favorite fantasy romance series and I feel like it is criminally under loved and hyped. While I don't want to talk about the plot of this particular book (because spoilers), this series has blown me away with this development across the books. y'all know how much i enjoyed the previous books but one thing i will not do is lie in a review, even if it's a book i fairly enjoyed because objectively this is a disappointing sequel. He doesn't have anything in particular that screams book boyfriend and doesn't really shine in a field where competition has set impossibly high standards.
