I have a 2003 Toyota Corolla. I opened the hood to check the air filter and now it won't close all the way. The safety latch engages (the one that you reach under the hood and open with your hand) but the main latch doesn't catch. If I push the hood down the hood just bounces back so it's slightly open.
You are watching: Toyota corolla hood latch won t close
This happened once before and I took it to someone who was able to fix it pretty quickly. I couldn't really see what he was doing, but it seemed to involve a lot of spray lube and a screwdriver.
I would love to fix it myself if possible. I tried googling and wasn't able to find a good answer.

I had the same issue on a 2001 Corolla. The main latch gets stuck and doesn't spring back to its default state, so it won't engate. To get it to work once, use a flat-head screwdriver and push down/left on that main latch. It's just to the right of center and you can just see a little bit of it. I found it by just pushing on everything until something moved. Once you put enough pressure on that latch it'll spring back to its proper position, after which the hood will fully latch.
To remedy the problem, you should clean and re-grease the latch assembly, and also lubricate the hood release cable.
