About this deal
HZ72 60 grit grit zirconium oxide grinding belts (4″ wide belt, 6″ wide belt). By far the most common belt. The 60 grit grinding belt allows for tip grinding (with care|) and when grinding steel 60 grit is often an acceptable final finish.
The speed at which your belt travels is the third key component to grinding steel. It needs to move significantly faster than a wood-sander to grind optimally. The 2x48” machines in our shop run at 4100 surface feet per minute (sfpm). A wider belt exerts more friction on the flat platen of a machine, needing more power and a longer belt allows for less time between belt changes but will also demand extra power. Stability mainly comes down to weight and build quality. Heavier machines tend to be more stable with less vibration and less chance of moving. Likewise, machines with a higher build quality won’t have any give from the parts when you apply pressure. Aluminium oxide sanding belts are now used much less commonly for metal sanding. The ceramics and zirconia grits normally give significantly improved belt life. Where aluminium oxide sanding belts are required we have a range of different materials we recommendFor example, a 2x72 grinder runs best with a motor of 2hp.. But a 1x72”: grinder would grind great with only 1hp. When you reduce your belt length, you also reduce the demand on the motor which is why our 2x48” machines are supplied with a 1.5hp motor. We recommend a square wheel configuration 2x72” or 2x48” if it's within the budget, adding attachments as you can afford them is an excellent way to build up your shop slowly.
To get the most out of your 2000mm x 75mm belt grinder while tube notching it is key to consider what you are going to use the tubes for after notching. As you can imagine, the only downside to this belt grinder is that its, well, pretty small. The belt itself isn’t that large, so if you have a large knife or something with a large edge, it’s going to take a long time to sharpen everything. If you want a larger belt, then this particular belt grinder might be a pass for you. For many beginners out there, however, this one will be a perfect addition to the workshop. 2. KKmoon Multifunctional Grinder The vertically configured 2x72's are an excellent grinder for the money and will out-perform most smaller grinders. They're an excellent option for hobbyists or for those just finding out if knife making is something they'd like to pursue. As the price difference in a file belt is small it is not a cost effective solution for the end user. For 95% of sanding applications the Cibo Ceramic file belts will significantly outlast any zirconia belts. To grind steel with abrasive belts, you need high belt speed and the ability to exert high pressure. Your motor has to keep up! The Larger the motor, the more powerful the grinder. A rule of thumb is you need 1 horsepower (hp) of motor power per 1” of belt width for a 72” long belt.
