About this deal

Nihal Arthanyake has done a wonderful job of telling us how wonderful conversations by bringing people who need to communicate on. From ever-decreasing face-to-face meetings to echo chambers online, we no longer have the necessary tools to talk to each other.

Let's Talk blends Nihal's experiences as an acclaimed interviewer with expert opinion on the secrets and psychology behind successful communication. P66[ Elizabeth Stokoe ]- ‘an effective conversation is one that generates the least misunderstanding, the least friction , the least need to do the thing again, And the least tension and friction and misunderstanding as you make progress together across the arc of interaction. The taverna is the only place that Kostas and Defne can meet in secret, hidden beneath the blackened beams from which hang garlands of garlic and chilli peppers, creeping honeysuckle, and in the centre, growing through a cavity in the roof, a fig tree. It is entirely from the heart, an impassioned please for more meaningful conversation amid this era of online squabbling and all too easy animosity. The pandemic has exacerbated the trend towards fewer face-to-face interactions, while the growth of social media has led to heated arguments online.Nihal is nothing less than the most intelligent interviewer in British broadcasting, so I had high expectations for his book on conversations, and it doesn't disappoint. It’s a very personal anecdotal take on conversation, the basic principles are ones that have been repeated in various places so nothing really enlightening. In The Coldest Case: A Black Book Audio Drama, homicide detective Billy Harney sends his new partner, Kate, deep undercover in a notorious Chicago drug ring. Arthanayake stated at the outset that this would be a book written based on his own experience so I was a little wary about how much depth he'd go for. It’s a fascinating concept and one that maybe you have pondered when you are considering your communication with those around you, both personally and professionally. We're not currently in the golden era of conversation - it has either eroded away into emojis or escalated into online wildfires. In each episode you'll follow one person's journey, getting to listen in on their coaching sessions with Selina and following them as she sends them off on a task to try out a new career idea. I enjoyed the voice clips of the people he interviewed and I wish that dialogue could have been more present.

Now Caine delves into the real stories behind the gangs we think we know so well, revealing the hidden realities behind the myths. I really can’t do this book justice in the review; it’s packed to the brim with such fascinating insights; we are lucky to have a fly-on-the-wall perspective of the conversations that would have happened to generate the content.Part how-to and part manifesto, Let’s Talk is Nihal’s accessible, anecdotal and invigorating toolkit to having better conversations with anyone, any time.

He currently presents the daily afternoon show on BBC 5 Live and the official Penguin Books podcast. As an essential part of my day job as a coach is having better conversations, I was intrigued by what I would uncover when I read “Let’s Talk (How to Have Better Conversations)*. Really enjoyed the writing style, but it felt like this was an autobiography packaged as something else. I enjoyed the fact that the author narrated the audiobook himself and it featured snippets of his interviews with some of the interesting people he talks to at work. I like that he uses the final chapter to summarise the majority of the key points from his interviewees.

There are times, in a workplace, which means this needs preparation before you start the pre-planned conversation. Sir Michael Caine knows a thing or two about gangs: whether that’s joining one as a kid, or playing them in movies for over 50 years. From tracing the evolution of dialogue to discovering what lights up in the brain when we're enjoying a good discussion, Nihal speaks to the experts - from the board room to the criminal courts - to find why good conversation has eroded over time and how we can fix it.
