Led by Captain Patrick Garstin MC, a man supposedly invalided out of the military due to his war injuries, rarely had a wilder bunch of raiders been assembled. Having blown to pieces scores of prize targets, Garstin’s patrol executed one of the most daring escapes of the war … only to fall victim to shocking betrayal.

A detailed and fascinating history of the men who helped establish and shape the SAS (especially "Paddy" Mayne), this work focuses on the early African deployments during WWII. Lewis’s prose is straightforward and compelling, and the chronological organization of the book makes the events (situated in the larger context of World War II) easy to follow. With Damien’s style of writing it causes your imagination to meet his and leaves you with a complete picture of the particular situation in hand.In this regard, Damien Lewis' Churchill's Shadow Raiders reveals the crucial role of radar in defeating the Luftwaffe, itself a precedent for the Anglo-American landings in 1944. What also comes through is how deeply the loss of each man scarred Mayne, how he felt like it was his responsibility to make the right decision for each person under his command, and how he could not let go of each loss. With nonfiction as a reader, you have to like the subject you're reading, but it's even better when you're reading actual history about the SAS, then find the main characters that the author picks out to focus on and you like them.

Armed with knowledge earned first-hand in the torture chambers of the Gestapo, the race was on to bring to justice the Nazi war criminals who had murdered their brothers in arms. There are also interesting accounts of the stool pigeons and traitors the Axis forces used to counter the SAS. There's a lot to be learned in the pages of this book about leadership in general, and leadership in adversity in particular. The regiment has its origins in the Second World War, when small bands of soldiers were dropped behind enemy lines in North Africa and Europe.
