Ten minutes later he emerged, and Dickie fell into step behind him: Dickie, who could follow a ferret through a wood let alone a leftover ghost. He hung by the monitor long enough for the hood to pass, then allowed himself to be carried forward, three warm bodies behind. The brilliant spy thriller ‘Slow Horses’ was one of my top discoveries this year and this, the second novel in the excellent ‘Slough House’ series very much lives up to my high expectations. He will drop the occasional crumb of information about dealings with the Russians, but as for possible ongoing threats, or reasons for them, he speaks only about an imaginary villain, a ‘scarecrow’ whom the Russians invented to get the British to follow.

This case harks back to the Cold War, and River chats to Granddad about it, but finds him pretty circumspect. If you like characters richly drawn, vivid, snarky descriptions and convoluted plots, this is the book for you. in " The BookBrowse Review" - BookBrowse's membership magazine, and in our weekly " Publishing This Week" newsletter.

London's Slough House is where washed-up MI5 spies go to while away what's left of their failed careers. Catherine Standish had been a fairly important person as assistant to and eventually carer for a very influential, but later disgraced, senior official, now deceased, hence her demotion. But even then, he’d never had a gold-standard Moscow hood shimmy past without clocking him for what he was. This was met with a communal groan of disgust, and not a little swearing, but most impressively to Dickie Bow, immediate readiness. In the aftermath, Tearney and Judd are forced to resign, with Taverner assuming Tearney’s place as First Desk.Judd uses the operation's apparent success to strongarm Tearney into privatising MI5's security, giving business to Chieftain, who are run by an old school friend of Judd's, Sly Monteith. Chris Reilly as Nick Duffy (series 1–3), head of MI5's internal affairs and tactical unit nicknamed the "Dogs". Curly and River engage in a brief shoot-out, before the former is knocked out by Hassan with a rock. Slough House Book 6: Jackson Lamb would rather be left brooding in peace, but even he can't ignore the dried blood on his carpets.
