I expected that I would have to hold my nose to put up with all these negative aspects of The Last Hero. However, when I started reading, I found instead that I enjoyed this novel a lot. It stars the legendary Cohen the Barbarian, a legend in his own lifetime. Cohen can remember when a hero didn't have to worry about fences and lawyers and civilisation, and when people didn't tell you off for killing dragons. But he can't always remember, these days, where he put his teeth... There's nothing about this story I didn't love. The dialogues and action sequences were great, and I loved all the mythology references and parallels to our actual history. There's really only enough material here for a story of exactly this length, but despite its brevity it's still got that special brand of Pratchett profoundness that all his best novels do. The Last Hero takes a spoofing yet poignant look at god and hero worship, destiny, the birth of legends, cultural memory, and coming to terms with aging and mortality, but wanting to leave a mark on the world. In the grand scheme of things, it may not be as substantial a volume as some others, but I found it delightful.

Paul Kidby's cover drawing on the hardcover version of the Last Hero cover shows Cohen in a typical Conan pose, while the softcover version has Rincewind doing his rendition of Edvard Munch's painting The Scream. Pratchett] managed to perfectly blend a carefully crafted plot, with humour, steampunk gadgets, and of course the librarian. This is a reference to Humphrey Bogart's classic line from the movie Casablanca, "Play it Sam" usually misquoted as "Play it again, Sam." The final line in the book is, "No one remembers the singer. The song remains". This line has Roundworld connections to traditional folk music where the songs are so well known they have become a form of collective knowledge but the original writer or singer is long forgotten. It also has a connection to the Led Zeppelin single and movie, "The Song Remains the Same." The line, 'My God, it's full of elephants!' is a take off on the line, "My God, it's full of stars!" at the end of the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.Thanks to the illustrations, it´s a very short one, even for Pratchettian dimensions, but very easygoing and without the often included deeper criticism, a once pure and innocent fun that creates its humor mostly out of characters and satirizing the original myth, space programs, Schrödingers´cat, and the good old end of the world. Born Terence David John Pratchett, Sir Terry Pratchett sold his first story when he was thirteen, which earned him enough money to buy a second-hand typewriter. His first novel, a humorous fantasy entitled The Carpet People, appeared in 1971 from the publisher Colin Smythe. While The Last Hero, A Discworld Fable, is Pratchett’s 27th Discworld book, the real HERO here is his collaborator Paul Kidby who provides a book full of illustrations. Cohen's discussion of epic poetry in which he talks about "[...] poems longer'n seventeen syllables." is an obvious reference to the Japanese Haiku style of poem which consists of 17 syllables in the form 5, 7, 5. So we get a madcap ride in a very daring contraption utilizing dragons, lots of hilarity from Rincewind pointing out the obvious death traps, Gods that don't understand sarcasm and much much more. Oh, and space! Yup, this novel had everything. Pratchett uses the same time notation for the countdown to lift off as NASA does - T minus 5 hours, the reply to which is "very good, we're at supper in 10 minutes". The picture of Carrot standing on the moon with the flag and saluting is a parody of the iconic moon landing photos of the astronauts standing next to the American flag and saluting. The elderly heroine who joins the Horde, Vena the Raven-Haired, is a parody of Xena, Warrior Princess, and Kidby draws her wearing the same style of armour typical of comic and computer game heroines in general and Xena in particular.

There's really only enough material here for a short story, Discworld Lite, if you will, but there's still plenty to enjoy. Meeting the Gods was fun. They are bringing a barrel with 50 pounds of Agatean Thunder Clay to the abode of the gods Dunmanifestin on Cori Celesti, a spike-like ice mountain at the Discworld Hub, and, there, they plan to detonate it. The small liner drawings and sketches of ordinary everyday items are consistent with Leonardo da Vinci's work with typical Kidby twists - the eagle carrying the salmon foreshadowing the actual airship the explorers use.
