These planes are ready to use from the box and do not need hours of flattening and fettling to make them fit for use (though we appreciate many woodworkers will prefer to hone the cutting iron themselves. The 3 mm thick high carbon steel blade is hardened to 61 - 63 HRC and connected with a thick and stable chipbreaker.

In fact, the combination of the mouth location and the very sensitive feed adjustment lets this plane serve as a jointer for most cabinet work.light sanding with 320 grit or finer wet/dry paper on a flat surface will keep the sole in as-new condition. Quangsheng bedrock pattern handplanes, unlike the more common Bailey pattern, have a full contact area between the body and the frog, hence the name 'bedrock'.

This extra length of sole in front of the blade makes it much easier to cut accurately because the extra-long nose makes it easier to maintain the sole flush to the material at the start of a cut. Note that this style of toothed blade works only with the bevel-up planes and not with the regular "bevel-down" bench planes. The Clifton Bench Planes are made from the finest materials: the body and frog are made from accurately machined grey cast iron with their sides and sole fully ground.As the frog extends right through to the sole, adjusting the frog to narrow the mouth does not reduce blade support as it does in standard planes of this style. It makes short work of preparing sawn timber and the wider 60mm blade covers more ground when flattening boards. You should never need to dress this surface, but if you do, use a very fine stone and be sure to maintain the angle.
