About this deal

In the early eighties she taught English Literature in Sheffield, London and Los Angeles, but moved into publishing in 1985 with the launch of Women's Review, a magazine for women on art, literature and female issues. Granted, the main character seems unstable and undecided beyond belief, letting herself stay surprisingly adrift and tossed around by events, but it still kept me glued to the book. As always read these books too fast and wish I had taken more time and can't wait for the next one .

One of the tourists is Evan, taking an enforced holiday from his family and work in Belfast after breaking down after the death of his daughter in infancy. It's been eleven years since they last saw each other but Liam has come to ask a favor and Jude agrees, how could she not? He has come to try to process his grief and make himself desirable again as a husband, a father and a business partner. The main character nearly drove me demented with her behaviour, and the story was full of jokes repetitive conversations that seemed to go nowhere. This is a truly heart-warming story of loss, recovery and above all, of community' Bernie McGill, author of The Watch House. There are several very unlikable side characters in this book, but for some reason Jude seems to be drawn to these horrible people. None of the characters were likeable, and yet characterisations were spot on, one of the hallmarks the author team is known for and what keeps me coming back for more every time. Then she enters Liam's adult world, his weird ass house that reminds me of a circus, with unsavoury, sexually aggressive, lost people, and develops her first singular opinion.

I could understand Jude’s frustration at no one believing the truth… that they had no current relationship, but needless to say her world falls apart. However, the story goes downhill from there - a nightmare mix of nasty characters, over- complex plot and bad choices. Als dit boek door een andere schrijver was geschreven, was ik er al in het begin van het boek mee gestopt. THE GRIPPING NEW THRILLER FROM BESTSELLING AUTHOR NICCI FRENCH, shortlisted for the 2023 Ned Kelly Awards for Best International Crime Fiction? Hun relatie was, jaren eerder, op dramatische wijze beëindigd en sindsdien hebben ze elkaar niet meer gezien.Who is she, the book asks, subliminally, when all these factors that tether her to her social self are untied and can she re-forge an identity for herself? Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you.

But Liam has a favour to ask, nothing big, no worries if you can’t, tell you what it is when we meet in Norfolk. The Favour is about a doctor, Jude, who gets an unexpected, out of the blue visit from an old flame, Liam.

In true Nicci French style, each chapter adds another wrinkle to the plot, ensuring that the reader is kept guessing at every turn. However, when she becomes the prime suspect in Liam’s murder, she makes one foolish decsion after the other which make her look even more guilty and put her life in danger. I did find this book a page-turner, as I just had to know what was going to happen and who was involved with what throughout the narrative. A busy life means that wasn't quite possible but I was truly torn between rushing to get back to it but not wanting it to be over yet.
