Horticultural Faux Pas (plants out of season or growing zones, like daffodils in autumn or bougainvillea in Alaska): NO Kellerman knows his native Southern California landscaping as well as the fact that silver-dollar eucalyptus is an interloper from Australia and both it and bougainvillea are hillside fire hazards. Kellerman, a trained psychologist, brings authenticity to his thoughtful protagonist…This long-running series is still going strong.

Michaelides seems also to be dipping into the world of Edgar Allan Poe, offering an unreliable narrator who feels more like a literary exercise. With his son, bestselling novelist Jesse Kellerman, he co-authored The Burning, Half Moon Bay, A Measure of Darkness, Crime Scene, The Golem of Hollywood, and The Golem of Paris . The left-hand photo shows a dirty disheveled homeless person off the street, and the right-hand photo shows the same person cleaned up and dressed as someone they wish to be. He is also the author of two children’s books and numerous nonfiction works, including Savage Spawn: Reflections on Violent Children and With Strings Attached: The Art and Beauty of Vintage Guitars. The only clue to the building’s function was a section, rear and central, lit by overhead tracks and containing a single, straight-backed chair, three high wooden Victorian armoires, a trio of silver light baffles, and two cameras on tripods, one of which looked antique.

Since being photographed three years ago, she’d also added steel piercings to her left eyebrow, her left cheek, her right nostril, and the soft spot between lower lip and chin. A psychologist myself, I liked the character of Alex Delaware and the mix of psychology and police work.

Thus homeless Jack is put into the flight suit of a Top Gun pilot; homeless Beverly is made up as a movie star; homeless Solomon is attired in surgical scrubs; and so on. The characters’ voices remain compelling, the traffic-clogged streets seem real, and the murders are puzzling. Moreover, Donny had a bunch of half-siblings from Victor's many marriages, most of whom he'd never met. He had been photographing homeless people who he had costumed as the person they had fantasized being.
