About this deal

Then used a couple of wires to connect it to the donor port and dug a bit of the frame with a x-acto knife to make way for the connector's bulkiness. We needed a new standalone monitor after our older one broke because the little ones ripped off the antenna! The monitor has everything you need to check on a (hopefully) slumbering baby: a color screen with night vision; a camera that zooms, tilts, and pans; an LED sound bar that depicts sound levels so you can turn the screen off if you want to; a range of up to 700 feet. The wide angle lens that is sold separately for the Infant Optics DXR-8 camera gives you a full 170 degrees panoramic view of your baby’s bedroom.Video streams in real-time to a lightweight and compact 3-1/2-inch LCD color display, providing crystal clear images with no video delay.

Performance of the DXR-8 is marginal at best, and just plain non-functional when the out of signal range issue surfaces out of nowhere. These new products of Silicon Valley not only give you the peace of mind a good baby monitor should, they even give suggestions and advice for improving your baby’s sleep. But as with anything one uses day in and day out, there are definitely things about the DXR-8 monitor I would change.

When you compare the DXR-8 with the new cutting-edge smart baby monitors available today, it’s obvious that the Infant Optics offering is resting on its laurels. This gives me peace of mind knowing that I don't have to keep looking at the monitor to make sure it's working. But knowing I had a reliable monitor that would alert me very quickly if something were wrong eased my anxiety.

It was great to be able to adjust the camera via the monitor when the baby moved to a different area of his crib. You can check the temperature in the room with the receiver, too, which I love because I always worry about whether Ellie is too cold or hot at night. Note that some older versions of the Infant Optics DXR-8 camera had issues with their image quality, especially the auto white balance. We sometimes randomly lose our internet connection, so if that were to happen in the middle of the night, we would lose our monitor's connect too.Even though I didn't want a monitor that had an Internet connection in the first place, there are some really cool features that Wi-Fi-enabled monitors offer — like being able to check in on the baby via an app when you're away at work. Night vision quality is also far above the DXR-8, which you can see for yourself at our Cocoon Cam review page.

It mounts easily to the wall using one screw and can be taken up and down or just placed on a side table. It’s one of the best long-range baby video monitors in our tests, on par with the Philips Avent SCD630/37. If you need even more range, we recommend you get a WiFi monitor instead (check the Nanit Plus Smart Camera) and boost your home WiFi network with a relay antenna. It’s not necessarily fancy, but I didn’t want it to be; like many parents, I preferred a radio-frequency-enabled (or closed-loop) monitor over a smarter, Wi-Fi-enabled one because of security concerns. Prior to the internet and video, all you had to select from was which monitor had the best audio quality and range. It’s obvious to us at Fathercraft that the DXR-8 is long past its prime, still coasting on an out-of-date reputation, supported by a serious lack of awareness about just how good the new best baby monitors perform.
