While the process of constructing your own all-plastic camera, rather than getting the usual ready-made off-the-shelf alternative from Lomo, is a unique and interesting one – and your respect for those factory workers who do this day-in-day out, with magnifiers strapped to their eyeballs, goes up immeasurably as a result – it does require oodles of time and patience and is not an experience we’ll be rushing to repeat, despite the satisfaction of completing the build at the end of it.

I found that quite a few photos turned out blurry due to me accidentally flipping the flimsy bulb mode switch, and despite the smooth focusing mechanism, the plastic lens is rarely very sharp. The DIY camera also doesn't use any sort of traditional camera sensor, and is instead made using a sensor from an Epson V35 flatbed document scanner – and this has some pretty significant drawbacks in terms of exposure time.

If you made your camera out of bare wood, you'll want to finish the exterior with a stain and lacquer to protect it from rain or anything it might encounter when outside. I mounted my pinhole on a piece of aluminum that is held in place with four machine screws, which also hold on the shutter mechanism.
