About this deal

The picture is projected onto a 16x16cm screen with transparent paper on which it can be viewed or copied by pencil. Simply insert a 35mm film (not included) and rediscover the joy of photography with your very own handmade camera. While the process of constructing your own all-plastic camera, rather than getting the usual ready-made off-the-shelf alternative from Lomo, is a unique and interesting one – and your respect for those factory workers who do this day-in-day out, with magnifiers strapped to their eyeballs, goes up immeasurably as a result – it does require oodles of time and patience and is not an experience we’ll be rushing to repeat, despite the satisfaction of completing the build at the end of it.

As I get into the camera that I built, you'll notice the film rests on a curved piece of wood so that itself forms a curve, and you might be wondering why is that? All you have to do is charge up the battery (or power the camera system directly via USB or the mains power adaptor supplied), download the free HDSmartIPC app, switch the covert camera system on and decide where you will hide it! Obviously, no other camera or meter is going to allow f221 as an option, so we need to make some calculations to find out how to do an equivalent exposure time from something that we can measure. But the finished product includes a pinhole lens board, and will accept standard large format lenses in a Linhof-style lens board. I found that quite a few photos turned out blurry due to me accidentally flipping the flimsy bulb mode switch, and despite the smooth focusing mechanism, the plastic lens is rarely very sharp. The DIY camera also doesn't use any sort of traditional camera sensor, and is instead made using a sensor from an Epson V35 flatbed document scanner – and this has some pretty significant drawbacks in terms of exposure time.

Firstly, the Konstruktor is equipped with ‘N’ and ‘B’ mode for regular and long exposures; of course, it has a tripod thread for keeping those long exposures steady. If you made your camera out of bare wood, you'll want to finish the exterior with a stain and lacquer to protect it from rain or anything it might encounter when outside. I mounted my pinhole on a piece of aluminum that is held in place with four machine screws, which also hold on the shutter mechanism. It’s time to take the next step on your exciting photographic adventure and boost your creativity to the max.

Those looking for welcome analog distraction from the digital world, or an opportunity to practice ‘mindfulness’ are directed to the Lomography Konstruktor, which will deliver just that in the patience-testing hours it takes to construct – plus the possible endless hours actually using the product. Plamodel 35mm point-and-shoot Straight from UltraFine Online: “The Superheadz Plamodel 35mm Camera Kit is a snap-together kit which also has been copied and sometimes is seen as the the ‘Camman DIY 35mm Camera. I remember it took Dad about an hour to apply all the tiny decals when I got a Jetfire action figure. After I got home and developed the film I was greeted with some extremely thin negatives (go figure). When you look into your box you shouldn’t be able to see light leaking in from the corners or edges.

The plan was simple: plug in the HQ camera board to the Raspberry Pi, program the system to take photos using a button, and then place all of the components into the gutted body of a toy, 35mm camera I found in my basement. We suspect that, like in other reviews we’ve read of this build project online, we may possibly have over-stretched it. For film knobs I got some 1/4" diameter aluminum rod and filed down the end to match the diameter of the 120 film spool. RECREATE YOUR OWN WORKING REPLICA FILM CAMERA: Once built, you will have your own working replica of a classic twin lens reflex film camera. The factor that affects the angle of the cone is the thickness of the material the pinhole is made of.The easiest way to do this is to have a piece of flat material in parallel with the pinhole, exactly the focal length away. You can make your own box from scratch out of any kind of light-proof material, or you can build the camera out of a preexisting box. We found it best to hold the lens firmly in place with one hand while making adjustments with the other; otherwise it’s all too easy to accidentally unscrew the lens, as this isn’t a piece of precision equipment we’re working with. Frustrating as many of its stages were, they made things all the more satisfying when I got to apply the finishing touches by picking my own stickers and leathery grip. Using the example of a 256 second exposure, the reciprocity factor is approximately 4x for that length of exposure, so 256 seconds turns into 1024 seconds.
