About this deal

Forget Jamie and Claire, it’s Sam and Graham that have the real chemistry. These two were clearly having the time of their lives galavanting about the countryside and taking the piss out of each other. Food Standards Agency (in England and Wales) or the local environmental health department: if you want to produce and sell milk. You may also opt to downgrade to Standard Digital, a robust journalistic offering that fulfils many user’s needs. Compare Standard and Premium Digital here. An elegy to a world and way of life that’s fading away… Bullough captures the beauty of the landscape and those who work it in clear, unfussy, always elegant prose” This is a beautiful book in so many ways. The striking cover design. Joe’s story: how birds had a profound effect on his wellbeing following a breakdown. The powerful message of the book, which recognises how much we need nature for our mental health but goes further by demonstrating how to make the most of your time watching birds.

This book, co-written by Sam Heughan & Graham McTavish, explores the ancient primitive Pagan past of Scotland, alliances and feuds between the different clans, the beginning of the Scottish Kings, Jacobite rebellions, and the very sobering battle of Culloden; this book is also about the adventures of Heughan and McTavish as they explore the beauty of Scottish highlands, the glory of whisky, Scottish sports, food, culture, the Gaelic language, and the filming of the popular Outlander series based off the books by Diana Gabaldon. This book has me even more excited about going on holiday to Scotland in September!Another strand is the change in attitudes to unmarried mothers - at the emotional centre of the book is Etty, who is forced to marry the proud but old fashioned and older farmer Idris while pregnant with Oliver, whose father has deserted her. Oliver is a giant, hard-working but hot-headed often drawn into fighting. His child Cefin is the product of a short-lived affair with Naomi, a student teacher and aspiring writer who refuses to sacrifice her career to the farm. With that seed planted in your mind, read on to find out exactly what a smallholding is, what you can grow and what you want to keep on it, and how to set one up once you’ve found your dream plot. What is a smallholding? Still you can't get too much Jamie Fraser, I mean Sam Heughan. I enjoyed reading about their early acting careers. I liked hearing about how they got their roles. I found their visit to Culloden Battlefield very moving. The history of Scotland told by McTavish was quite interesting. I love the story of the Glencoe Massacre especially fascinating. I also loved the debate over Rob Roy's burial spot captivating. Justine Jordan, The Guardian, summed it up in her review: ‘Harvest can be read in mythical, even biblical terms, but the physical and emotional displacement of individuals and communities at its heart remains as politically resonant today as it was at the time.’ The Living Mountain, by Nan Shepherd Ambitious in scope… the author’s psychological understanding of his people is particularly impressive… Bullough views his subjects, as E. M. Forster wrote of Thomas Hardy, ‘from an enormous height’”

Hauntingly beautiful and harshly realistic… When he is finished, you find the place has become a part of your very soul” If you’re a fan of the TV series Outlander and are new to Scottish history, heritage and culture, this book will be great for you. Not only do Graham and Sam cover the actual story of the Jacobite Risings, they also tell the stories of other famous characters, such as Mary Queen of Scots, William Wallace and Rob Roy. Interspersed throughout stories of Scotland, they share their own personal journeys as well as stories from the set of Outlander. The writing style and organization of this book was wonderfully done in that it read as part memoir, part adventure, and part historical fact. Although that may sound strange, it combined excellently into an enjoyable and balanced read. After reading this book physically, I can't help but want to listen to the audiobook which I believe is narrated by the authors. This book was hilarious and I think the narration would make it even funnier.

Explainers

It’s a beautiful evocation of a small mixed woodland in Herefordshire through a calendar year. It’s a diary of the changing wood, its character and its wildlife, but also of the pigs and cattle that he brings into the wood to help manage it and feed on it. I will buy anything related to Outlander and this is a profound book, along the lines of the Ewan McGregor/Charlie Boorman, Billy Connolly or Bill Bryson books. How much land you’ll need will depend on the balance between subsistence and cash crop farming that you’re going to be doing, as well as what you’re going to be growing. If you’re only producing for yourself and your family, you’ll need around five acres of land. There really is no set formula for the amount of land, though you should consider some factors: How much time you want to spend on the land: Another choice is grazing animals like geese and sheep: they can take care of your grass as well as providing a source of food. Goats, too, though they have to be managed carefully to prevent them from eating your crops. How much does it cost to set up a smallholding and what are the legalities?
