About this deal

A little salty; a little malty; honey sweetness, big orange zest (amongst other citrus fruits); and a lovely underlying smoke that doesn’t really overplay it’s part. To my surprise, I actually preferred the Aberfeldy 12 from the pack, but would reach for Clynelish 14 over this.

You should also note that the picture images show only our serving suggestions of how to prepare your food - all table accessories and additional items and/or ingredients pictured with the product you are purchasing are not included. I agree with others that it is overly sweet, but this would be a positive if you were new to scotch. On the nose: There is an initial puff of wax that fades immediately and turns into caramel sauce and bubble gum. Once that settles though that zesty and citrusy set of flavours is joined by a real heather honey sweetness, a good bodied malt and just a little smoke. S. Some say it’s because it is easy to pronounce (though having said that, remember it’s ‘OH-bin’ and not ‘O’Bahn’).The expressive character and the rich aromatic palette, dominated by fruit, outline a rather complex personality for a young whiskey. This product is hand packed onsite by Bottled and Boxed, and is not affiliated with any other brand. Once I poured in a dram and settled down on my desk, I went to Malt, wondering what others have said about this whisky, and was shocked to learn that there haven’t been any pieces on Oban 14 yet! A bustling seaside resort has grown up around the distillery in the two centuries since it was first built in the fishing town of Oban. This may affect factors including the product style and allergen information, and we would advise that you always check the label and not solely rely on the information presented here.

Oban 14 Year Old is a superb combination of rich sweetness and smoky dryness with fruity notes of oranges, pears and dried figs, plus hints of sea-salt and peat smoke notes. I went to my liquor shelf for a much-needed dram, considered my options, and decided to look for a whisky that wouldn’t need much thinking, one that I can maybe enjoy while reading a book (this time, for leisure), watching a series, or even woolgathering. Pre-dating the town of Oban, it was originally established in 1794 by brothers John and Hugh Stevenson.

The spirit is matured in a combination of American oak and European oak casks, which gives it a unique and complex flavour profile. The West Highland malt is still produced in the same unhurried, traditional fashion and this 14 year old is a classic whisky from the distillery.

I had the pleasure of going to the Oban distillery a few years ago and it offered a great tour and insight into the whisky and it’s history. It underwent a refurbishment in the 1890s and there has been little change to the present buildings since then. One of the last distillery's to operate in the centre of a town, Oban distillery dates back to 1794.

We'll send them to be recycled and you'll save paper, carbon emissions and time at the recycling centre! There is also some cut wood and a little sweetness on the palate, with fruit and dried oak notes on the long finish.
