About this deal

In The Cherry Orchard, the characters expect the successful businessman Lopakhin, the son and grandson of serfs, to propose to Varya, the adopted daughter of impoverished aristocrats. Finally, in 1888, Chekhov published his first work in a leading literary review, Severny vestnik (“Northern Herald”). The play is sometimes included on the short list of Chekhov's outstanding plays, along with The Cherry Orchard, The Seagull and Uncle Vanya.

The plot of Ibsen’s first major play, The Seagull, is fairly conventional; Chekhov’s symbolism and self-conscious reflection on the nature of drama are the main features that distinguish this work from that of earlier realist and naturalist playwrights. Amazingly enough, this is the first time I have read a Chekhov play in English (read some in Russian when doing my degree). Steppe,” an autobiographical work describing a journey in Ukraine as seen through the eyes of a child, is the first among more than 50 stories published in a variety of journals and selections between 1888 and his death in 1904.He was a literary artist of laconic precision who probed below the surface of life, laying bare the secret motives of his characters.

robert leach An early reading of The Sea-Gull at the Moscow Art Theatre with Anton Chekhov (seated centre-left). Banality revenged itself upon him by a nasty prank, for it saw that his corpse, the corpse of a poet, was put into a railway truck 'For the Conveyance of Oysters'. Chekhov captured life in the Russia of his time by using a deceptively simple technique devoid of obtrusive literary devices. The ingenuity and insight displayed in that tour de force was especially remarkable, coming from an author so young. After briefly attending a local school for Greek boys, Chekhov entered the town gimnaziya (high school), where he remained for 10 years.Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Palme d'Or winner Winter Sleep was adapted from the short story "The Wife" by Anton Chekhov. Tolstoy was an early admirer of Chekhov's short stories and had a series that he deemed "first quality" and "second quality" bound into a book.
