With the light string gauge and easy playability high up the fretboard, playing the Bo' Rhap solo was a very joyous experience! Personally, I think he excelled at the early styles of country and slide stuff, so I never really listened to the whole thing, it was an ambitious project, and I am happy to see him still around, on the fishing programme. The Blues went in yet another direction, when it started to mingle with Celtic and Scottish/Irish influences, forming still another hybrid.Me Dad loves his stuff and it reminds me of being a young un, his Dad's ice cream and cafe were legendary in the town. Chinery intended the project to be an homage both to D-Aquisto and to the artistry of the archtop guitar.

At the time it came out, there were a few harrowing interviews where Chris was thinking this would be the last music he made, due to cancer. When the originally African and South-influenced Blues were brought to Louisiana, New Orleans, the Mississippi Delta, new instruments were added – clarinet, brass, piano, mandolins, accordions – and along with the banjo mingled into an interesting mix, which would be known as New Orleans, Swamp, Cajun or Riverboat Blues. I'm very impressed with the build quality, all the details are flawless - it's a very fine guitar, and value for money is great. It is also worth noting that the Blue D’Aquisto Centura Deluxe was featured at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the museum’s “Guitar Heroes” exhibit in 2011. From the undeniably classic pastel tones, to the deep blues that mimic the ocean as the natural wood grain peaks through, blue guitars just look great.

Combining neck and bridge pickups (out of phase) has a thinner, almost honky, tone that paired with amp distortion (ideally a Vox AC30) is pleasingly unique. This can result in some very unique sounds, from round humbucker based tones (in phase) through to thinner, almost vocal sounding tones that can help a solo cut through a band mix (out of phase). The 120 songs composed and arranged and recorded by Chris Rea with his friends are so authentic and deeply felt, it is a 'Gesamtkunstwerk' like nothing else. The Blue Guitars project proves that when a musician is on a sacred mission, he can do without the big record companies.

Some of it is great, some of it not my taste, but the dedication to putting that much music together has to be admired. It is clear -- and Rea makes it clear -- that the blues pervades everything in American musical history.
