About this deal

Alain de Botton has this uncanny ability to spit out everything that my brain is thinking in beautiful and candid writing minus any fluff.

And I’m pretty damn certain that all of us could do with hearing how much we are loved simply for being ourselves.Sure, my self-esteem is close to non-existent (lol) but it’s interesting how I immediately blame myself in such situations rather than relaxing as I generally do with people I’m comfortable with. It is one of the ironies of love that it is easiest confidently to seduce those to whom we are least attracted. I was astounded that de Botton was only twenty-one when he wrote this book because, wow, the amount of maturity and insight this book has. So, to have it written that even the best relationships don’t have that element of complete vulnerability was heartening. The beautiful and complex prose is enough alone to make you read it but then there's that incredible insight that you can only give when perceiving something from a subjective second person position.

But, in his other books I have always been able to take away a lot of points that are useful to my own life, or which make me think about things in a new way, which is not the case here. I suppose I’ve been disappointed by how few people really understand me (though maybe we all feel that way? Those who commit a certain kind of suicide perhaps forget the second part of the equation, they look at death as an extension of life (a kind of afterlife in which to watch the effect of their actions).

The Subtext of Seduction” and “ Authenticity” discuss our desire and frustration with our worthiness, “ Marxism” on our fear of being loved back (“ how soon their attractions might pale if they began to love us back!

Imagine, of all impossible things, a young British Woody Allen with the benefit of a classical education and you have the nameless and exquisitely erudite narrator of Essays in Love. That made me want to realign my goal for beauty (which is, currently, stuck in an Audrey Hepburn-esque body) to being associated with warmth and kindness and comfort. These critical essays bring together prominent scholars in the social sciences to consider the diverse nature of the legacy of Pierre Bourdieu in contemporary social theory.
