About this deal

We see various shots of Robocop, a profile of a criminal on a screen and Robocop in a car witnessing a crime. There are fluctuations, sure - the composited stop-motion animation leaving any live background action looking softer and poorer in quality, and that aforementioned grain varying as a result - but these are relatively brief and understandable instances where the effects of the time leave any 2022 transfer as only highlighting these inherent limitations. The usual suspects seem to be just as worked up over crime and the idea that the United States is going to hell as they were not only three years ago, but back in the 1980s too. That makes the reportedly 'exclusive' new book a pretty expensive new addition (EDIT - we were not supplied with a book with the check discs so are unable to confirm the content).

In fact, capitalist greed, authoritarianism, and gentrification are perhaps more relevant in the 2010/20s than they were in the 1980s (not more prevalent, but at least more readily acknowledged in public spaces). She is also a Cinema reviewer and works with RealD 3D reviewing the latest 3D releases and IMAX, she has also had several articles published in various publications including the first edition of SFW Magazine. com reviewers and contributors have once again come together to compile individual lists of their favorite releases of the year. Those of us that saw the movie back in 1987 will have a love for the theatrical cut that we were treated to, this Director’s Cut is the one that many of you who never saw the movie on the big screen will know about the cut as it’s usually the one that is on the Blu-ray releases of RoboCop, there are some extra extended scenes that increase the violence and gore, plus a slight comedy element that during my screening had a good few fans laughing loudly. With Hollywood inevitability of making remakes, it was a sure thing that RoboCop would be “rebooted” for the modern-day audiences, but unlike the original with its 18 certificate, 2014 has got a 12A, seriously, I kid you not! Arrow has reissued their excellent two-disc RoboCop set on 4K, even going so far as to source new 4K scans of the trims that were added back in for the Director’s Cut (and originally taken out to avoid an X rating).

Lest we miss the point, Clarence, a budding entrepreneur, even directly says that there’s no theft like free enterprise. So looking back to 1987, we salute Paul Verhoeven for the original version and yes he may have been criticised at the time for the violence, but RoboCop has stood the test of time and is still appreciated by the fans of the now cult classic. Of course, as ever, the image gets that added push from WCG and HDR (here with Dolby Vision too), which leaves strong black levels, and wonderfully represented colours. It's informed so many films since, yet nothing - not even the sequels (despite some excellent ideas in the second one) and certainly not the remake - can come close to this original.

It’s never quite clear who the joke is on in Paul Verhoeven’s films, as the filmmaker thrives on mixed messages, fashioning an aesthetic that blends trashiness with designer style.

That iconic poster design takes me back to my childhood and the image quality of the movie is breath-taking. RoboCop, from Orion Pictures, marked Flesh + Blood director Paul Verhoeven's Hollywood debut and instantly became an enduring sci-fi/action classic when it landed in theaters in the summer of 1987. A movie classic from the 1980’s that has aged wonderfully and is still just as entertaining as it was upon its release. Also, to my eye, the grain during a handful of sequences appears more like digital noise, which is something I’ve started noticing with multiple studios’ UHD upgrades.

MGM then released the first anamorphic release in 2001 (it was also included as part of a trilogy set), a 2007 special edition that included an anamorphic version of the unrated cut (alongside the R-rated cut), an unrated/R-rated Blu-ray in 2007, and a remastered unrated Blu-ray in 2014, followed by Arrow’s BD in 2019. The set includes some fine art cards, double sided poster, a humorous sticker and a superb 80-page book full of information surrounding the film’s production, themes, impact and legacy. Having rewatched the film the most times on TV and as part of the family-friendly VHS home game, I quite enjoyed the latter comparison. And the physical effects are stunning, holding up far better than CG from decades later, with ED-209 still menacing in person, the Robocop suit a true work of art, and the wonderful industrial setting of the film reminiscent of a more brutally real variation on Burton's Batman environments.Initially uninterested in RoboCop , Verhoeven eventually connected to Murphy’s existential crisis and loaded the film with visual Jesus metaphors – both common interests for the director – but I believe it was his outsider status that led him to poke fun at the literally explosive antics of ‘80s American action movies. if your a fan of the movie like myself and know it too well, yes I think you will notice improvement. A more earnest sci-fi auteur might’ve wrestled with the existential crisis of a man who’s turned into a machine, a development that suggests the ultimate commodified invasion of an invasive age. Originally, MGM did not specify the source of the additional print elements used for the unrated shots. Not notch transfer and I like the plastic j card which was easy to remove from the steelbook itself.
