About this deal

I didn’t do a reread before diving into The Rogue Crown and I regret it. I read The High Mountain Court and The Witches’ blade over six months ago and I’ve forgotten a lot of information (except for my favorite scenes of course I remember all of those). You definitely need the context from the previous two books to be able to follow Breanna and Lina’s story. The relationship between Bri and Lina throughout the book is amazing. I loved all of the banter and growth they go through together as Bri is trying to break free of what everyone or almost everyone in the western Court believes that she is there to do, while Lina is trying to figure out how to take over as ruler while there are still those out there that want to kill her. Lina is a badass battle axe wielding princess that is amazing. I loved her and I loved her sarcasm especially after she had been around Bri for a little bit of time. While I don’t consider this book enemies to lovers, it definitely has some elements of that and if you want the banter that comes with enemies to lovers this has it. I loved seeing Bri and Lina grow as characters both together and apart and they were very well done as characters. I adored Bri in the previous books so seeing her get her own book and continued character development was amazing and everything I could have wanted. I can see why this has blown up on booktok/bookstagram, given how popular ACOMAF is and people saying that this is like an almost carbon copy. I know that it is sometimes difficult to avoid this in fantasy romance because it is very much a niche genre, but there were way too many overlaps for it not to seem related or inspired by characters/scenes in ACOMAF...

This book right here! Look Bri was already a favorite character from the previous books and her getting time to shine is what I was looking for. You get her as you know her from before, but also get the chance to see her finally feel like she can lower her guards along the way. I think AK does a great job capturing the dual nature of warriors in this character. The High Mountain Court by A. K. Mulford was the perfect fantasy to escape into this week! Before I get lost in my fangirling, I will say that I’d probably recommend only ages 18+ read this NA fantasy, but it’s so worth a read. I’m actually a little embarrassed to admit that The High Mountain Court has been sitting in my TBR fort for months, but we all know there’s more where that came from…My first issue with this book is the POV. We see everything through Remy's eyes. I'm not a big fan of this type of storytelling, especially for books marketed towards a more mature audience. It truly narrows the interpretation a reader can come up with for key elements of the story. Anyway, Remy, as a character, was promising at the beginning. She seems far from naïve and works at a tavern while hiding her witch powers. She recognizes faes and potential threats, takes a lot of initiative when she must save herself and those around her. I thought I would like her.

This book is everything that you ask for in a fantasy story. I was immediately ensnared in the story, The characters are complex relatable and hilarious. I would actually kill to be a member of the squad. The magic system is easy to understand and the world is easy to follow along with. World building is great, I wish I could visit there myself. I laughed, I cried, I blushed. This book has it all. Thirteen years fleeing witch hunters and the looming threat of death. Nineteen-year-old Remy knows she is possibly the last red witch alive, and she is determined to stay that way. The Northern Court King has slaughtered her home court and placed a bounty on red witch heads. Bri wants to solve the queen’s murder as fast as possible because of the prophesy that was made when she was born, she is going to try and change it. This enemy to lovers tale finds passion among the adventures that seem to always be chasing the series' cast of characters. Mulford wonderfully balances the action and intrigue of the plot alongside the sweet sentimental moments where the characters shine through - the attention given to all the familial and platonic relationships (alongside the romance) of this series is part of what makes it an immediate favorite. My only fault for this installment is sometimes the plot felt too future-focused, as if it was more about setting the stage for the rest of the series. But as someone who is planning to read the entirety of the series, I can't be too mad about that. While this book has mystery elements it is through and through a fantasy romance but I don’t mean that in a bad way. The mystery storyline is very fun and helps to develop the relationships of Bri and others around her but it provides the base for the adventure this book really is about.

There were maybe like three scenes that felt were way too similar to some iconic scenes from ACOMAF. If it weren't for the other elements in the book this would've prompted me to give it no more than a 3-star. I am Blown away again by A.K Mulford. This book had me laughing, smiling, crying, I know I screamed at one point (no spoilers 😉) and...possibly questioning why I don't read more Sapphic stories. To be completely honest, this is my first Sapphic novel and I was NOT disappointed. Worldbuilding is done very well, and you learn more and more about the world, the politics and the history, as the story continues in each book and novella. There are fae and humans. There are five courts of Okirth – The High, North, South, West and East Courts. Fae are the royalty of each court. There is quite a bit of intrigue between the courts, the witches, humans and Fae. I think Mulford does a great job of showing us pieces of the world to build that history and different cultures between each court and kind of witch.

This couple is also my favorite of the series. However, I think I say that every time. It’s hard to beat Remy, but Bri managed to show so much personality as the series progressed and it was so fun being in her shoes. She is flawed, real, and such a bad ass. I adore her so much and love how acceptable her sexuality is and that in this series it is all about love, empowerment, and there’s nothing that a couple can’t overcome through honesty and working together. before we given begin, look at the title. HOW UNREATIVE is that? I mean we've had our fair share of ACOTAR copy cats but guys we are in 2022 and we should find better titles. I thought the ending reveal of this story's villain was a bit too fast, I like to savor moments that have been the story's main lead-up, but fit into the overall series thread. It connected the hovering Norwood while also bringing in some answers about the violet witches that have been thought long dead. There was also a great lead-in to, what I think is going to be book 4, concerning Bri's brother Talhan and the heir to the Southern Court.
