The young woman looked out the window, hesitating before she spoke, as if she were half-ashamed of what she was about to say and half-glad she was able to. A burst of laughter, as jarring as the sound of gunfire in the middle of the night, shot through the grille.

She first meets Henry, the Duke of Clayborn, at a ballroom in Mayfair where he speaks rudely to her and she believes he is a cold and arrogant.
