I too remember the smell of burnt Castrol R, but that was back in the day when bikes were used every day, engines were regularly de-coked and ordinary oil was still found in pools oozing from the ground. Nowadays a flexible fibre optic device is used but in days of yore a sigmoidascope was used - simply a worryingly large diameter brass or stainless steel tube and a torch.

Does anybody know where i can get some original castrol R racing oil from, i know that you can get an oil that smells similar but i don't want it just for the smell, back in the late 60's early 70's when i first started helping Greg Lawton and Dave Brierly with their 50cc race bikes, they swore by rebuilding their bikes using castrol R on everything and had very few problems with mechanical issues so i would like use it on my rebuilds. do what you want but i advise anyone else not to dump castor oil into your four stroke fuel tank at any ratio,,especially if you just want to smell like roger decoster? It had been a little slow to build pressure from cold for a while but never displayed a pressure problem once running. I too thought about using Castrol R, but I seem to remember that it does leave a lot of residue in carbs and after it’s burnt. On four-strokes where people use Castrol R in their crankcases I can see why they wouldn't mix, and this is where the warnings come in; but on the total-loss, burn the whole damn lot in the combustion chamber two-stroke, it seems not to matter. I understand the nostalgia, but wouldn't marvel mystery oil or seafoam in your gasoline do the same thing? However, I also can confirm that it does not mix with mineral oils, so is strictly for a clean, freshly built engine and box. Thinking of smells that I do find attractive and evocative I advised them to put a few dabs of castrol R behind their ears and then see the effect it would have on the male population. I now run it religiously in my rally car and it gives steadier pressure than the Millers CTV I ran before it.No issues that could be related to choice of oil, but when I tried Maxima is wasn't as easy to get hold of as it is now.
