About this deal

McGoohan, creator of the cult British TV series The Prisoner, also directed two episodes, in one of which (“Identity Crisis”) he also plays the murderer. Like that literary classic, the show that shares Columbo’s name functions as an inverted detective story, not so much a whodunit as a howcatchem. As I mentioned in the audio section, each episode has an optional music and effects track that is pretty cool to listen to. I mean he walks into the bathroom where his uncle is in the bath and says that he has a present for him.

Episodes are often deep-stacked with other familiar faces appearing as murder victims and associated characters. While a Japanese Blu-ray boxset has been available for some years, its prohibitive pricing has placed it out of reach of most fans.

One of the foremost pleasures to be garnered from Columbo stems from the always sterling acting, especially watching Falk go tête-à-tête with the episode’s “guest murderer,” invariably a high-wattage performer familiar from their work in film and TV. They were posted on YouTube by someone ages ago and they are of the scenes between Peter Falk and Rod Steiger. The roast aired in early Feb 1978, about a week after “Murder Under Glass”, right about the time that Falk started to layer on the exaggerated Columbo schtick. The show has always been entertaining in any format, but it’s a real treat to watch the show looking so fresh. Thinking about it, I wish they hadn't announced this right now, and had done so much closer to the release date.

The list of iconic Hollywood stars and great character actors that make an appearance, or often multiple appearances, in Columbo is massive. The collection also includes the two feature-length pilot episodes 'Prescription: Murder' (1968) and 'Ransom for a Dead Man' (1971). I’d gladly pay a nominal fee to be able to hear the thoughts and musings of so many personalities even if I had to manually sync them on my phone or portable device.

With acting veteran Falk cast in the lead role, the movie was a hit, and was expanded into a series of feature-length episodes starting in 1971. It appears that some work was done to rebalance content that may have looked uneven, even rough, but I did not see any traces of problematic degraining/denoising work introduced by automatic settings. If you've never watched Columbo, then you've missed out on an incredibly fascinating series of detective stories that took a novel approach to the whodunnit formula. Once Columbo was on the scene--played by the iconic Peter Falk--he'd gradually pull the truth from the murderer, as he poked holes in their alibis, found vital clues, and generally wore them down with his unrelenting habit of being incredibly polite to the culprit while putting up a false front of a shabby and absent-minded investigator. Kino Lorber's first Columbo set is slated for release this summer, with the second to follow later this year or early next year.My personal take on the Negative Reaction ending is that he’s thinking about his own wife and his love for her, and wondering in horror and disbelief how someone is able to murder their spouse. Oh, one more thing… it would be great if Kino-Lorber offered each set as either a standard or deluxe box. Growing up in the 80s without cable and only a crappy aerial to pull in the scant few Detriot area stations, I got to see a few reruns of Columbo, but I didn’t get into the show in earnest until my college years.

Some of those stars may be in poor physical or cognitive health, may not want people to see what they look like now, or may not consider their appearance on Columbo to be a particularly important part of their careers. Once you start an episode you can’t stop in the middle, and then when you’re done with one, hell, you might as well start the next! Independent filmmaking icon John Cassavetes brings his diabolical charm to the season two opener “Étude in Black,” and it’s rumored that he may have directed parts of the episode as well, though it’s far afield from his preferred style of improvisatory histrionics. Peter Falk's Columbo is one of the all-time greatest American TV characters, and this is why he will always be remembered.Booklet - a 20-page illustrated guide for the multiple episodes in the first seven seasons of Columbo. The minor issues range from balance and stability inconsistencies that most viewers will not even notice. It's obviously not set in stone yet and plans can change, but he also shared that every episode is expected to include a commentary track, archival interviews, essays, and possibly more supplements. He could go to London, or Acapulco, and be just as effective -- and perplexing to his foreign colleagues -- as he is at home.
