About this deal

Several patterns of linking the rings together have been known since ancient times, with the most common being the 4-to-1 pattern (where each ring is linked with four others). In Europe, the 4-to-1 pattern was completely dominant. Mail was also common in East Asia, primarily Japan, with several more patterns being utilised and an entire nomenclature developing around them. Kusari gusoku or chain armour was commonly used during the Edo period 1603 to 1868 as a stand-alone defense. According to George Cameron Stone Don’t start by making your own jump rings. Seriously. If I had had to make all three hundred jump rings required for my first chain maille project, I would never have gotten to the fun part of actually linking them together. There are so many places where you can buy pre-made jump rings that are perfectly good, it makes sense for a chain maille beginner to buy their jump rings. Shark expert and underwater filmmaker Valerie Taylor was among the first to develop and test shark suits in 1979 while diving with sharks. [55]

[15] In early medieval Europe "byrn(ie)" was the equivalent of a "coat of mail"

I found Chain and Bead Jewelry Geometric Connections by Scott David Plumlee ISBN 978-0-823033393-3 much better value for beginners with less weaves (as I said before the different weaves and clear visual guides are available on the net for free). Herodotus wrote that the ancient Persians wore scale armour, but mail is also distinctly mentioned in the Avesta, the ancient holy scripture of the Persian religion of Zoroastrianism that was founded by the prophet Zoroaster in the 5th century BC. [12] Early medieval chainmail covered the body, later chainmail that also covered the head was also added.George Cameron Stone (2 July 1999). One of the things that bothered me when shopping for my first set of jump rings for chain maille was that I couldn’t find the exact size specified in the project. I had no idea if I should be more concerned with the inner diameter (ID) or outer diameter (OD), since they can be slightly different. Those little differences can make for big problems when it comes to your chain maille projects, and since the jump rings are linked together on the inside, you should always make sure to get the proper inner diameter jump rings for your chain maille projects. Mail worn today for re-enactment and recreational use can be made in a variety of styles and materials. Most recreational mail today is made of butted links which are galvanised or stainless steel. This is historically inaccurate but is much less expensive to procure and especially to maintain than historically accurate reproductions. Mail can also be made of titanium, aluminium, bronze, or copper. Riveted mail offers significantly better protection ability as well as historical accuracy than mail constructed with butted links. Japanese mail ( kusari) is one of the few historically correct examples of mail being constructed with such butted links. [38] Decorative uses [ edit ] Major's shoulder chains A modern example of the use of mail, a bracelet using the roundmaille weave One recent critic of "chain mail," Hugh Knight, The Play of the Axe: Medieval Pollaxe Combat (2009), offers this discussion of the topic in a glossary entry for mail: We hope you enjoyed this article on medieval chainmail. Chain mail was an important innovation in the medieval armory and was commonly used by most medieval soldiers.

Chain mail had various types and designs which were prevalent in different parts of the world. It consisted of interlinked metal rings which would be arranged in various ways, although the most common way was an arrangement of rows and columns. Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-duc, Encyclopédie Médiévale and Dictionnaire Raisonne du Mobilier Francais de l'Epoque Carlovingienne a la Renaissance. At the end of the book there are instructions on how to finish pieces off, how best to attach clasps to the various types of weave, if you need to know how to do some other basic jewellery making techniques such as make a loop in a headpin for a bead for example it shows you, and it also contains details on aspect ratio, how to calculate it and has lots of tables to help you with this when it comes to designing your own pieces or in some cases find alternative jump rings if you can't find exactly what is required in a pattern. This is an American book so the suppliers listed are generally from that side of the Atlantic but I have found these useful as I have found it difficult at some times to find just what I need or want in the UK. Honestly, that would be Phong's but finally, here's a chain maille book devoted primarily to skills building instead of projects highlighting variations on a handful of techniques. My first book on chain maille was the classic "Great Wire Jewelry" by Irene From Peterson. Chain Maille Jewelry Workshop by Karen Karon seems to be the heir to Peterson's book. It's an anthology of chain maille weaves.

Large-linked mail is occasionally used as a fetish clothing material, with the large links intended to reveal – in part – the body beneath them. Mail continues to be used in the 21st century as a component of stab-resistant body armour, cut-resistant gloves for butchers and woodworkers, shark-resistant wetsuits for defense against shark bites, and a number of other applications. There are some excellent books and DVDs on chain maille jewelry currently on the market and those into chain maille already have them. Chained by Rebeca Mojica is probably the best not only because of the photography and stunning projects but also the quality of information and instruction. However, Chained doesn't feature the European 4 in 1 or any of the Persian Weaves but it covers the Japanese 12 in 2 which isn't in Chain Maille Jewelry Workshop. Open your jump rings properly. This sounds like a no-brainer, but it’s important to remember. You don’t want your jump rings slipping apart after you’ve spent hours assembling an intricate piece of chain maille jewelry! You should always open your jump rings by twisting the ends apart, moving perpendicular to one another (north-south). Never open a jump ring by pulling the ends apart (east-west). On the correct English front, as part of a section on how to distinguish between mail and male, Henry Hopkins, A Key to Exercises in Orthography and Exercises in Composition on an Improved Plan, second edition (1844) has this sentence:
