I have rarely become more involved with or cared more about a group of folk who seemingly have very little to care about than in Angel Pavement. Mr Golspie arrives with a dispatch case containing a sample book of veneers and inlays, and asks to see Mr Dersingham. Priestley's style is readable and imaginative; his descriptions give an in-depth insight into the milieu and characters. to be replaced by Paul Smith (no relation to Dave) on vocals (also previously with Machine), followed by Alan who was replaced by Mike ‘Candy’ Candler on drums (ex-Machine and Roll Movement).

The novel has been twice adapted by BBC Television, in 1957 and 1967, and there is also a fascinating (and surprising) Russian television version dating from 1969. There are some hugely entertaining characters, although you would never be inviting them round for tea, in fact you wouldn’t want to poke any of them with your grandmother’s ten foot barge pole, but that just makes it more fun. Not long after the structure is laid out, as the characters become more familiar, we're treated to comedic turns in the story, where perhaps the reader is led to know more about what will happen than the people involved.

The story of pavement artist Sid Bunkin and his two angelic friends Corky and Loopy (who are not always best friend with each other) and the marvellous journey they take him on with a set of magic pencils. I would not have thought of reading this book if it had not been the book group's choice, but glad I did read it. After all, the band was hardly a household name in its heyday, and its peak of exposure consisted of a pair of failed singles at the very tail-end of the 1960s in England. After the war Priestley continued his writing, and his work invariably provoked thought, and his views were always expressed in his blunt Yorkshire style. His favourite among his books was for many years the novel Bright Day, though he later said he had come to prefer The Image Men.Despite numerous high-quality recordings being made at Morgan Studios in Willesden, north-west London, the group failed to obtain a release for their intended album, Socialising With Angel Pavement finally released in April 2019. But, equally, it doesn't delve deep into their personalities, and so everything remains rather unsatisfyinglly superficial. The latter club, in Swallow Street Mayfair, was part-owned by George Harrison, and in the audience that night was Jorge Rubio who owned the Downtowner hotel chain in Mexico and the Southern States of USA. Early 1970 saw the release of ‘Tell Me What I’ve Got To Do’ (Beckerman) b/w ‘When Will I See June Again’ (Shepherd) but it fared little better than the previous release. Now re-issued by Great Northern Books in both hardback and paperback it benefits from introductory contributions by Tom Priestley, the author's son, Lee Hanson, the Chairman of The J B Priestley Society, and D J Taylor, a biographer, critic, reviewer and novelist.
