About this deal

Any attempt at meaningful discussions on the books themes felt superficial to me, and distracted by an insufferable need to assert the tragic but beautiful shine of Cleo. He offers her the chance to be happy, the freedom to paint, and the opportunity to apply for a Green Card. Maybe because each chapter was concerning a different person, which I used to love but didn’t in this circumstance. I think one of the first things that made me fall in love with this book was how New York City wasn't romanticised; it wasn't made to sound like this wonderland where all your dreams come true (more spew).

She, an early 20s artist, and he, a mid-40s ad executive, bond over their troubled family histories and seek solace in one another. Mellors also does not have the ability to make her insufferable characters compelling like Moshfegh. But this the story of just two of those people, and I think Mellors did a pretty masterful job of it. Cleopatra and Frankenstein, the luminous debut novel from Coco Mellors, is a book about many things: It's a great, swooning love story; a shattering depiction of how addiction and mental illness warp our lives; and a perceptive, witty portrait of globalized New York. The effects of their marriage reverberate out into the lives of their family and friends: Zoe, Frank's ambitious half-sister; Quentin, Cleo's best friend grappling with his sexuality; Eleanor, a new hire at Frank's office; and more.

He offers her the chance to be happy, the freedom to paint, and the opportunity to apply for a green card. However it's a really good thing to be aware of these topics before starting this book especially if you have any triggers yourself; just be mindful!

though i love it, i can admit that this type of literary genre or niche does tend to not have the substance you’d expect an overtly hyped book to have and often appears juvenile.Coco Mellors is an elegant and exciting new voice' PANDORA SYKES, author of How Do We Know We're Doing It Right New York is slipping from Cleo's grasp. you can’t just slather more cement on top of an already-filled hole and expect the outcome to be smooth. That kind of romance book makes me want to spew and my eyes will roll out my head if I don't pull them out first. If you can grip me that quickly, we're off to a good start, which is exactly what this book did (which is super rare for me!

But their impulsive marriage irreversibly changes both their lives, and the lives of those close to them, in ways they never could've predicted. it touched on a lot of things that it failed to explore them in a more meaningful way, so that the important topics became a quirky backdrop for the characters instead. And I would've appreciated a bit more time to have the characters really dig into their issues, to grapple with the fact that the world is much bigger than just the two of them; though in some ways I think that's part of the point Mellors is trying to make. I overall highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something that will make your heart warm and shattered at the same time. Whereas the older generation are in a state of success but also unhappiness and discontent with the decisions they’ve made – Franco turns to alcohol and Santiago is enamoured by his weight loss journey and how he appears to others.

I, like every vaguely creative young person, have multiple diagnoses, but my brain chemistry failures never include installing art with my self harmed body at the center for my loved ones to find, I will tell you that.

The comparison to Rooney is a reason I kept passing on reading this book as I was scared it would be another book that would take too much effort to stay engaged with. I think this book hurt so much because it makes you fall in love with the idea of love, the idea of a “person” and then lets it crash hard. After graduating with an English Literature degree and taking on a Communications job, Sophie's Edit focuses on her love for literature and film, good food, pop culture and her love for Scotland.
