About this deal

Nothing happens in the first 100 pages except the loving description of the handful of quaint eccentric caricatures that people this story.

Elvis Cave: The big and loud school bully who wears an American footballer's outfit and breaks windows (even when he sleepwalks), he was once Ruskin's friend but grew jealous of him when he became friends with Corky.I was really glad that it ended the way it did, with Ruskin being a great role model for children who may find themselves in similar situations (friendship-wise, not battling a sewer beast! Mildly creased front endpaper, else near fine, in gilt-lettered green boards; in a very mildly age-toned, otherwise illustrated dust jacket with minor creasing and shelfwear. My brother was never really into reading, which is another reason why my Mum recommended it to me as it is popular with boys and engages them with reading. As well as books and plays for adults, Philip has written many other books for children including Krindlekrax (1991), winner of the Smarties Prize and the WH Smith, Mind-Boggling Books Award, Kasper in the Glitter (1994), nominated for the Whitbread Prize, and Scribbleboy (1997), shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal. Smarties Prize-winning children's fantasy about the mysterious dragon Krindlekrax who lives beneath the cracked pavements on Lizard Street.

Found it particularly useful with year 3 as they could somewhat relate experiences in the book with their own experiences, and were then able to feel more empathetic towards the characters, particularly Ruskin. In the lower years it could be used as a whole class story, perhaps reading a chapter at the end of the day before home time. Krindelkrax by Philip Ridley is the book that was read with the year seven class I worked in last year. Lace: The school teacher who enjoys sucking pencils and gets hysterical whenever William Shakespeare's name is mentioned. He wants to be the hero of a school play, but everyone criticises him for his appearance and voice, and the role is instead given to Ruskin's window-smashing former friend Elvis Cave.
