About this deal

Sheppard does not shy away from highlighting Helen’s blackness and addressing important issues about identity and belonging. As the years go on I am so happy to see that interesting and multi-dimensional female protagonists are simply becoming the norm in YA literature. Additionally, they have been shown great surprise when Shivian made a change to the style of the comic such as the introduction of color, legs, or fleshed out backgrounds.

The students also had the opportunity to post their questions and received some tips on the writing process.I think the story could have been so much better but it just felt rushed in some places and unbelievable in some. Helen is a relatable character dealing with many everyday teen issues whilst also coming to terms with being related to Greek Gods. pop quizzes, Secrets, too much homework, uncertainty if she’ll be able to continue running and get a scholarship to her dream college, SECRETS and liking a popular boy who seems to hate her. Characters are well aware of their existence as characters in a comic, and they are often depicted as conversing with Shivian or commenting on things occurring in his interactions with the comic or life at large.

Olympus, she discovers her new classmates are gods and mythological creatures are actually real—as if junior high isn't hard enough! At the very end of the book, Phoebe finds out the biggest secret of her life: Phoebe is a descendant of Nike, the Goddess of Victory. The last couple of chapters had me really tearing up as Helen delivers a heartfelt speech, and finally starts to open up to her new friends about why she’s been so flakey of late. That's right, they're real, not myth, and their teen descendants are like the classical heroes: supersmart and super beautiful with a few superpowers. I read Oh My Gods over a couple of days and would recommend to anyone who wanted a fresh and fun take on Greek mythology.
