Tired of adjusting my PS1 laser, I took to the internet and I can't get a straight answer. It seems the original fat model plays PS1 and most PS2 games and every other PS3 model plays PS1 games but not PS2. This is fine, I don't care about PS2.
You are watching: Does the ps3 play ps1 games
I went to Gamestop and I see all PS3s are on sale, joy! And the employees very politely and repeatedly told me no PS3 played PS1 games except for the fat model and they were wildly unreliable. Allegedly.
And yet the PS3 wiki clearly states all models play PS1 games. I'm in North America with North American PS1 games looking at North American PS3s.
Do you think it's a solid alternative for someone who just wants to play PS1 games? SOTN, FFVII, etc. Admittedly, there isn't much I'd buy in the way of PS3 games but they are dirt cheap right now so I don't have much to lose.
EVERY PS3 will run your PS1 discs, the employees at Gamestop were wrong. In fact, unless you want to know the release date of the next two or three big blockbuster games, I wouldn't rely on their advice for anything.
Another fun fact is that you can remote play every PS1 game (disc and digital) on a Vita or PSP.
I use my PS3 for PS1 games all the time. Just recently went out and bought a small stack of PS1 games to add to my collection.
The PS2 backwards compatibility is only on PS3s that have the 4 USB ports. Definitely don't trust waht the Gamestop employee is saying, and get yourself a PS3!
All PS3's play PS1 games because it uses a software emulator, both physical and digital, the emulator is very high quality, there are almost no unplayable PS1 games.
You can also play PS2 games on all PS3's using the xploit, but only ISOS,and not all games work.
Hmmm, this actually reminds me of an additional question:
We should all know that every PS3 can run PS1 games, but is there a difference between how an original PS3 runs PS1 games compared to other PS3's? The original PS3 contains PS2 hardware, which apparently allows for better compatibility with PS2 games (this could be compared to the PS3's that merely use software emulation to run PS2 games). Does having the PS2 hardware inside of a PS3 allow it to run PS1 games “better”? Or does every PS3 simply choose to run the PS1 games through software emulation?
The PS3 runs PS1 games using a pure software emulator all models do this,PS2 hardware has nothing to do with it.
Yes the original PS3 runs PS2 games pretty much perfectly because there's a complete PS2 on the motherboard, the components that allowed for very good PS1 compatibility on the FAT PS2 are not present in the chips that are on the PS3 motherboard because the PS2 chips on the OG PS3 are taken from the late slim models that relied on pure PS1 emulation too.
TL;DR:All PS3's run PS1 games using the same method.
Trivia:You get different results running a PS1 game from the disc compared to buying the digital version on the store, that's because the PS3 actually has 2 different PS1 emus (actually 3 but the last one is never used AFAIK),one for physical games and the other one for digital games.
