About this deal

He wants to know the location of her people’s sacred city*** (so he can massacre the shit out of them). DISCLAIMER: The name of this series, “Obsidian,” is derived from the rock that must first be broken to form a weapon. Beyond the power struggles are age-old traditions and rules, which if not followed, have harsh and often deadly consequences. These people need to make tough decisions and sometimes they really think over what the impact of it will be. And because I have a similar antagonistic-erotic relationship in my own work-in-progress novel between a mercenary pilot, and the warlord who hires and tries to kill her near the beginning of the book.

It’s a desert storm of enthralling confusion, of incense smoke and mirrors, packed with duality, prophecy, foreshadowing and hidden meanings, and offering reflections on the failings of our own world. The characters felt so real to me: they truly leapt off the page, but that does not mean they will always be likeable, which is just fine with me! He expects Deo di Amara to kill him, but instead Deo di Amara points him in the direction of the White Desert and abets his escape. The equally sharp characterisation is superb, from all the mannerisms to their distinctive patterns of speech. Obsidian is the first book she has decided to publish due to requests from fans who have been following this story on the internet.

Thrown as a child into a prison of depravity and torture, none of the atrocities this man who rode with his troops to conquer the Vilarhiti, commands or commits with his own hands rival the things he saw, suffered, feared, endured. It has more twists and turns than a rollercoaster, with cliff-hangers at the end of most chapters, and is full of nuances and subtext.

Somehow, even if they only met up occasionally to exchange bodily fluids, they would have made some progress with this shit. The characters and world are so clear and defined that you feel like you've read a few books in the series already. There were certain parts where I just needed to pause for a second and think about what the character was going through. They’re all so broken and twisted and messed up in so many ways, and all of them are just aching to be loved and accepted and known in a way they’ve never been able to experience, even if they don’t know it. A hard, remarkable, engrossing adventure in which every chapter packs a combination of punches, often sucker punches at that.As a book the story is interesting, encourages you to read from cover to cover and the characters are well formed and relatable. The sexual and non-sexual relationships in Obsidian are as satisfyingly complicated as the political ones and are usually intertwined with them and the geopolitical landscape. He is desperately, painfully, beautifully human, and there is even nobility left, deep inside, obscured by all the vile things he has endured and how he dealt with them, and all the vile things he has done, sometimes in the name of that last remnant of nobility. An assassin turned bodyguard, a teenage 'royal', a wayward prince, and a concubine queen all find themselves at the center of a dangerous game of war and politics.
